Pinoy adaptations of Korean shows in 2024

by Joanna Deala

LAST year, viewers saw several quality films and series made by talented and skilled Filipinos. Now that a brand-new year has come, audiences are probably expecting more in the coming days.

It seems that the local entertainment industry is ready to catch the attention of Filipinos with its 2024 lineup, which will include Philippine adaptations of their favorite South Korean series and a movie.

Republicasia collated some Filipino remakes that you might not want to miss:

‘What’s Wrong with Secretary Kim

Multimedia idol Kim Chiu and award-winning actor Paulo Avelino are reuniting for the Pinoy remake of popular K-drama “What’s Wrong With Secretary Kim,” following the success of their thriller-drama series “Linlang.”

ABS-CBN Entertainment teamed up with streaming platform Viu for the local adaptation of the romantic-comedy series to be produced by Dreamscape Entertainment.

The Pinoy version will feature Chiu as Secretary Kim while Avelino will play the role of Mr. Vice Chairman. These characters were originally played by Park Min-young and Park Seo-joon.

In “What’s Wrong with Secretary Kim,” Avelino’s character is a handsome but narcissistic vice chairman of a major corporation. His world turns upside down when his competent secretary decides to resign from her job after serving for a long time.

Sparks fly when he tries to do everything in his power to keep Secretary Kim by his side.

Chiu and Avelino will be joined by Janice de Belen, Romnick Sarmenta, Angeline Quinto, Pepe Herrera, Franco Laurel, Yves Flores, Gillian Vicencio, Kaori Oinuma, JC Alcantara, Cai Cortez, Phi Palmos, Kat Galang and Brian Sy.

Viu Philippines announced that South Korean actor Kim Wonshik, who appeared in the first season of “Alchemy of Souls” and in “True Beauty,” will have a special participation in the show.

Kim previously worked with a Filipino production for the series “Pag-ibig Na Kaya” starring real-life couple Julie Ann San Jose and Rayver Cruz.

The remake’s premiere date this year has yet to be announced.

‘It’s Okay to Not Be Okay

The Kapamilya network will also produce a local adaptation of another hit K-drama, “It’s Okay to Not Be Okay.”

The remake will feature Anne Curtis, Joshua Garcia and Carlo Aquino, according to a TV Patrol report. This will be the first television series project that Curtis will headline in almost a decade, after “Mars Ravelo’s Dyesebel” in 2014.

The 2020 K-drama originally starred Kim Soo-hyun as Moon Gang-tae, a caregiver in a psychiatric ward. He is also the guardian of his older brother Sang-tae, portrayed by Oh Jung-se, who is on the autism spectrum.

Destiny will make Ko Moon-young, a famous children’s book author with antisocial disorder, cross paths with the Moon brothers, whom she will share one roof with.

Curtis previously shared on X (formerly Twitter) that the series had become “one of my top faves now.”

The show’s premiere date has not been announced.

‘Running Man Philippines’ season 2

The Pinoy version of the South Korean reality-game show “Running Man” will return for a second season.

“Running Man Philippines” confirmed this in a Facebook post, along with a 15-second teaser of the forthcoming show which promises to be “bigger” and “crazier.”

Co-produced by GMA Network and SBS Korea, the first season was headlined by Glaiza de Castro, Ruru Madrid, Mikael Daez, Lexi Gonzales, Kokoy de Santos, Angel Guardian and Buboy Villar.

The first season which premiered in September 2022 ended in December 2022 with Guardian being hailed as the first-ever Ultimate Runner.

Further details about the new season, including its premiere date and if there will be new cast members, have not been revealed.

‘Wonderful Nightmare

The 2015 South Korean romantic-comedy film “Wonderful Nightmare” will also have a Filipino adaptation.

Real-life couple Sarah Geronimo and Matteo Guidicelli will topbill the remake, according to a GMA report. This was revealed during the media conference of the forthcoming movie “My Zombabe.”

The original movie was headlined by South Korean actress Uhm Jung-hwa, who played the role of  successful lawyer Lee Yeon-woo, who falls into a coma due to an automobile accident. She is given the opportunity to live as another woman for a month. Little did she know that she would face challenges she had not dealt with before as she becomes a housewife to a civil servant husband and a mom of two.

The Pinoy remake of “Wonderful Nightmare” is said to be one of the projects of Viva Entertainment this year. This will be a reunion project of the couple on the big screen, following the “Catch Me, I’m In Love” in 2011.

Geronimo’s last film was “Unforgettable” in 2019 while Guidicelli starred in the official Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF) entry “Penduko,” which is now being shown in local theaters.

The film’s premiere date is still under wraps.
