PAGASA issues flood alert as La Mesa Dam nears spilling level

by Carl Santos

The state weather bureau PAGASA issued a flood warning to low-lying villages on Saturday night in case monsoon rains caused the water at La Mesa Dam in Quezon City to rise to spilling levels.

At 9:30 p.m. Saturday, the water level at the dam was 79.81 meters.

”Excess floodwaters in La Mesa Dam will overflow in the event that the dam’s elevation reaches 80.15 meters,” PAGASA said.

It said the excess water may affect low-lying areas along the Tullahan River from Quezon City (Fairview, Forest Hills Subd., Quirino Highway, Sta. Quiteria, and San Bartolome), Valenzuela (Brgy. Ligon, North Expressway, La Huerta Subd.) and Malabon.

“All the residents living in the aforementioned areas, especially those near the river banks, are advised to be alert for possible flooding,” PAGASA said, adding it will continue to provide updates to the concerned agencies and local government units.

At 6 a.m. Sunday, the water level at the dam slightly went down to 79.79 meters.

PAGASA said the Southwest Monsoon, enhanced by Severe Tropical Storm Falcon, would continue to affect Metro Manila in the next three days.
