Nintendo announcement sparks rumor on possibility of Switch 2

by RepublicAsia

After an announcement through social media platform X, formerly Twitter, speculation has spread within the gamer community on the possibility of a Nintendo Switch 2.

Nintendo Co. Ltd. President Shuntaro Furukawa wrote in an X post that the company “will make an announcement about the successor to Nintendo Switch within this fiscal year.”

Although Furukawa’s announcement has ambiguity, he advised users not to expect any mention of the Nintendo Switch successor announcement in the Nintendo Direct livestream, a series of online presentations where upcoming Nintendo content and franchise is explained such as information on games and consoles, this June 2024.

“We will be holding a Nintendo Direct this June regarding the Nintendo Switch software lineup for the latter half of 2024, but please be aware that there will be no mention of the Nintendo Switch successor during that presentation,” Furukawa stated.

The fiscal’s year of the corporation ends in March, meaning users might have to wait until Spring 2025 to learn what’s next for the Switch that was released nine years ago.

Nintendo Switch is a gaming console that was a hit success during its release in March 2015. As of today, Nintendo has sold over 141 million units making Switch the third-best-selling console of all time, trailing only behind the Nintendo DS (Developers Screen or Dual Screen) and the PlayStation 2.

Among the games Nintendo developed, “Animal Crossing: New Horizons” contributed to the Japanese company’s success especially during the crisis of coronavirus lockdown where between March and November 2020, 12 million Switch consoles were sold, a 73 percent increase compared to the same period a year earlier.

Nintendo Switch became popular since it is the first commercially successful gaming hardware that is playable both as a handheld device and as a desktop console connected to an external display.
