AS more and more musicals are starting to go mainstream – “Hamilton” and “Mean Girls,” to name a few – many have started to look for more shows to enjoy as well.

If you’re looking for a musical to go to where you can marvel at the acting prowess and singing talents of its performers, here are a few that are coming soon to theaters near you.

  1.  “Little Shop of Horrors”

Based on the 1960s film with the same name, “Little Shop of Horrors” is a horror-comedy-rock musical that looks at the story of a florist who must care for a sentient plant with a thirst for human flesh.

As this is a local production of the musical, it features an all-Filipino cast of beloved Filipino talents, who include Karylle Tatlonghari and Sue Ramirez as Audrey, and Nyoy Volante and Reb Atadero as Seymour.

This musical is perfect if you’re looking for a dark comedy, akin to Broadway shows like “Sweeney Todd” and “Beetlejuice.” It’s set to run from July 6 to August 2024.

  1. “Six! The Musical”

“Six! The Musical” follows the six wives of King Henry VIII. Here, the six wives sing on stage and discuss who amongst them had it the worst, given that two were divorced, two were beheaded, only one survived, and one died – yikes!

If you’re a fan of historical musicals like “Hamilton,” you may want to consider getting tickets to this show. It’s opening on October 4, 2024, at the Theatre at Solaire.

  1. “One More Chance, The Musical”

Want a blast to the past and rewatch one of your favorite Filipino films, but this time with Popoy and Basha singing?

“One More Chance, The Musical,” featuring the beloved songs of Ben and Ben, is having a rerun from August to October.

This rerun will continue to have the talents of Sam Concepcion and CJ Navato as Popoy, and Anna Luna and Nicole Omillo as Basha. It tells the story of the original film, wherein a college couple struggles to stay together after their relationship has lasted so many years.

  1. “I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change”

This musical comedy is one of the longest-running Off-Broadway musicals, and it’s now getting a local production, to run from June 14 to July 6.

Starring Gian Magdangal, Gabby Padilla, Krystal Kane and Marvin Ong, the Repertory Philippines (REP) brings to life this musical that follows the love lives of 40 different people.

It serves as a series of vignettes that aim to discuss the complexity of these different relationships, whether it’s couples, spouses, situationships, or whatever else.

If you’re trying to move on from a rocky relationship, or simply want to watch a musical about love and heartbreak, this musical is the perfect watch for you.

  1. “Ang Parokya ni Edgar the Musical: Buruguduystunstugudunstuy”

If you loved “Ang Huling El Bimbo The Musical,” whose story was accompanied by the lyrical genius of the Eraserheads’s beloved songs, you may want to check out “Ang Parokya ni Edgar the Musical: Buruguduystunstugudunstuy.”

The show’s name comes from Parokya ni Edgar’s second album and looks at the lives of four women named Jen, Norma, Aiza, and Girlie.

Though they are of different ages and backgrounds, there is one thing they do have in common: they were all born on the same day, December 6th.

The musical follows the different struggles each character faces as they are transported into a world called “Parokya,” forced into a journey wherein they will have to learn about themselves, whether they want to or not.

This musical will be running only until 8 June, so be sure to check if there are still tickets available ASAP!
