IF you spend a lot of time on Tiktok, chances are you’ve already heard YK, the viral song of hiphop artist Cean Jr.
It’s not exactly a new song, but like most hits from years ago, content creators and Tiktok users gave it a new life, and it is now enjoying renewed popularity online.
YK was released in January 2021 but it started gaining a lot of attention at the start of 2023 because of the platform TikTok, said James Banaag, public relations head of Cean Jr.’s management O/C Records.
“We from O/C Records are grateful because the Gen Zs continuously show appreciation for Cean Jr.’s music, particularly YK,” Banaag told republicasia.
The song was released back in 2021. Two years later, it has racked up more than 10 million streams on leading digital platforms and has given Cean Jr. over 700,000 monthly listeners.
The YK sound
YK, which stands for “you know,” has an old school soft R&B sound carried by Cean Jr.’s easy vocals. It has a mix of English and Filipino words that match its melody.
His vocals make listeners remember the intense feelings one gets when falling helplessly in love and longing for a lifetime with that special someone.
Cean Jr. isn’t just the voice behind the song, he was also responsible for its composition, production and arrangement.
Because of his digital success, his label is pushing for bigger exposure for him and his music.
“We would love to showcase Cean Jr. and his music to the fans by lining him up for gigs and concerts, and if possible, on bigger media platforms including TV. His old and new fans must also watch out for his upcoming releases,” Banaag said.
Who is Cean Jr.?
Cean Jr. is a 27-year-old hiphop R&B singer who first made waves with his pop ballad Binibini, released in 2021.
He started writing songs and producing his own tracks in 2019.
Barely a year later, at the height of the pandemic in 2020, he was discovered on YouTube by Kean Cipriano and Chynna Ortaleza, who own O/C Records. The couple signed him up to their label.
