by Joshua Gerona

Rising OPM artist Maki recently made a music comeback this year with the release of his new single entitled ‘HBD’ last Friday, January 5.

The new track talks about remembering the birthday of one’s former lover despite not being together anymore.

Like his previous tracks, the alternative-pop singer-songwriter explores the concept of heartbreak and yearning for love, but what makes the new song unique is its display of maturity and acceptance of lost love in the process.

In the chorus of the song, the persona still wishes his ex a happy birthday, albeit knowing there is no chance of getting back together.

The song aims to capture the relatable feeling of greeting someone estranged on their special day, reflecting whether it is okay to reach out or just completely let go.

In an X post, Tarsier Records announced that the song has already reached more than 50K streams on Spotify almost one week after its launch.

The new single also secured the top spot on Spotify’s New Music Friday, with Maki featured as the cover artist on the same playlist.

Maki also kicked off 2024 with an intimate launch party for his new single last January 7, attended by some of his fans who bravely shared their own HBD stories.

Maki is known for his hit songs ‘Saan’ and ‘Kailan’, which both hit the Viral and Top charts in the Philippines.

HBD is now available on all music streaming platforms, including Spotify, YouTube Music, and Apple Music.
