Long-awaited trailer for “Beetlejuice” sequel finally drops

by Gaby Agbulos

IT’S SHOWTIME, folks!

The Ghost With The Most is making a comeback to the big screen this September 6, with Warner Brothers finally releasing the trailer for the film.

The film “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” is set years after its 1988 predecessor “Beetlejuice,” and will be directed once again by Tim Burton.

Here, Lydia is now an adult with a daughter named Astrid, to be played by Jenna Ortega. Following the passing of her father, she and her family return to their old house in Winter River, where Betelgeuse has continued to reside after all these years.

Little else has been revealed about the plot of the film, but one thing’s for sure: it’s going to be one hell of a ride.

Reprising their roles are Catherine O’Hara as Delia Deetz, Winona Ryder as Lydia Deetz, and of course, Michael Keaton as Betelgeuse.

Aside from Ortega, several other well-known actors have also been announced to be part of this project:

  • Justin Theroux as Rory
  • Monica Belluci as Delores (wife of Betelgeuse)
  • Willem Dafoe as Wolf Jackson (a deceased ghost detective)
  • Burn Goman as a reverend
  • Danny DeVito
  • Arthur Conti
  • Filipe Cates

Haris Zambarloukos, the film’s cinematographer, said that the film will look into the intricacies and human condition in keeping a family together in the time that has passed since the first movie, all while being set in the craziest world possible.

Burton also explained that, in the sequel, he tried to make it in the same spirit as the original, with the crazy effects used and the quirkiness of its characters alive and well.

“I tried to strip everything and go back to the basics of working with good people and actors and puppets,” he said.

“It was kind of like going back to why I liked making movies.”

At last, the most important detail of all – yes, “Day-O” will be a part of the new film. O’Hara herself confirmed this to be true.

About “Beetlejuice”

Following its release, Beetlejuice was quick to become a cult classic given Burton’s signature style and Keaton’s outstanding performance as Betelgeuse. Upon its release, it made over 73 million USD, a stark contrast from its 13-million dollar budget, despite pushback from executives toward producer Larry Wilson.

It became one of the highest-grossing films of that year and even won an Academy Award for Best Makeup and Hairstyling.

Thanks to the unique storyline, styling of its characters, dark humor, and wacky CGI you can only find in an ‘80s film, “Beetlejuice” is beloved by fans and continues to be celebrated today with costume recreations and watch parties seen from all over the world.

Given O’Hara, Ryder and Keaton’s reprisals of their original roles, and with Keaton saying that the sequel was the most fun he’s had on set in a long time, it’s safe to say that it’ll be getting just as much love as the original did, if not more.
