La Salle’s rookie Canino overpowers Eagles

by Aeron Pineda

DE La Salle Lady Spikers dominated their rival school Ateneo Lady Eagles, 25-16, 25-20, 25-13, in UAAP Season 85 Women’s Volleyball Tournament on Sunday, March 5 at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City.

The Lady Spikers showed their strength in their first match against Ateneo in front of 10,574 fans with the help of their super rookie Angel Canino, who scored 23 season-high points with 21 attacks, one block and one ace.

Canino also received her third straight Player of the Game, but kept a word that the team still needs improvement to sweep the season 85.

“Every game naman may natutunan kaming bago sa sarili namin, so expect niyo po na magiimprove pa po kami and try namin ang best namin and magenjoy sa loob ng court po” Canino said.

Jolina Dela Cruz also brought the fighting spirit inside the MOA, soaring with 10 points and three blocks.

Thea Gagate backed up Canino, contributing 10 points for their blowout win against Ateneo.

Lady Eagles tried their best to keep their heads up in the game, but only Faith Nisperos scored decent points for the team. She had 10 points and one block, which are still not enough to fight back with the high competence of the Lady Spikers.

With the impressive performance, the Lady Spikers took the solo lead 3-0 in season 85. Their aggressive attacks and defensive block led the way to their impressive season start.

Conversely, Ateneo suffered with a 1-2 win-loss record and still struggles to keep up its wings and secure a spot in the final 4.
