Kiefer Ravena to play for Strong Group in Jones Cup

by Bryan Gadingan

COMING off a spectacular run in the B.League Division II by leading the Shiga Lakestars to a championship, Kiefer Ravena will return to the country to play for Strong Group Athletics (SGA).

The Frank Lao-owned Strong Group Athletics announced yesterday the commitment of Ravena, who will represent the country in the 43rd William Jones Cup that will be held from July 13 to 21, 2024, in Taipei, Taiwan.

After being relegated to B2 a season ago, Ravena and his team made sure to redeem themselves by topping the division to go back to B1. He averaged a solid 10.51 points, 4.0 assists, and 2.59 rebounds per game.

Despite not having a long break from his grueling season in B.League, Ravena is excited to represent the country once more–this time in an SGA uniform.

“I’m really excited to be part of the Strong Group and play in the Jones Cup. It’s a great opportunity for me to showcase my skills in front of our kababayans again and contribute to the team’s success,” Ravena said.

“Gusto ko talaga maging part ng team na ‘to at sana makabawi kami from the heartbreak we experienced in Dubai,” he continued, citing the runner-up finish SGA had earlier this year.

“This is a chance for redemption, and I’m looking forward to giving my best effort for the fans and for our country,” he said.

For Ravena, this will be a chance for a comeback from the heartbreaking finals of the 2024 Dubai International Basketball Championship, and that he is looking forward to give his best for the fans and the country.

Meanwhile, there will be an exciting reunion between Ravena and head coach Charles Tiu, who represented Mighty Sports back in 2016 Merlion Cup, and the 2017 Dubai International Basketball Championship.

“I’ve always been a big fan of Kiefer’s game and IQ. He’s one of my favorite players of all time. I’ve been wanting to get him on one of my squads again for a long time, and I’m happy it worked out this time,” said Tiu.

“He always loves representing the country, and when I called him, he accepted the offer to play again without hesitation. He just needs to rest a little as he just won a championship in Japan,” he said.

Apart from Ravena, the commitments of Jordan Heading and Caelan Tiongson to Strong Group were secured a few days ago.

One thing’s for sure: SGA will come back hungrier than ever, not only to secure the gold but also to represent the country once more.
