Joey de Leon defends Maine-Arjo wedding, takes swipe at Noli de Castro

by Izel Abanilla

TV host Joey de Leon seems to have taken a swipe at veteran journalist Noli De Castro over the latter’s remarks about Maine Mendoza and Arjo Atayde’s wedding pushing through despite super typhoon Egay wreaking havoc in many parts of the country.

On TV Patrol’s newscast on Friday, July 28, De Castro commented on the report about the Mendoza-Atayde wedding during the closing minutes of the show.

“Kayo habang kinakasal, kawawa naman yung mga binabagyo,” De Castro said.

The wedding was held in Baguio City, one of the areas badly hit by the typhoon.

Netizens cried foul over De Castro’s comments, and it appears that De Leon was among those who unhappy over the remark.

De Leon spoke up in defense of Mendoza and he did it in his signature creative wordplay fashion.

On Twitter, he addressed his “kababayan” criticizing the couple for pushing through with the wedding. Incidentally, De Castro is famously called “Kabayan.”

De Leon said Mendoza and Atayde had planned their wedding long before they knew that a typhoon was coming.

“[N]aunang nagplano sina Menggay kaysa kay Egay! Wala silang kasalanan kundi ang unang limang letra ng ‘kasalanan’—-KASAL!” he said.

De Leon, alongside his fellow E.A.T main hosts Tito Sotto and Vic Sotto, served as principal sponsors in Mendoza’s wedding to Atayde.

Netizens weigh in

Both De Castro and De Leon’s remarks made rounds online as netizens shared their various takes on their statements.

There were those who lauded the comedian for standing up for his co-host while praising him for his comic style.

But there were those who did not like De Leon’s statement and came to De Castro’s defense.

Meanwhile, netizens had criticized De Castro and accused him of being inconsiderate because of his remarks about the wedding that had been planned in advance.

Even on TV Patrol’s newscast on YouTube, netizens did not hesitate to call out the show’s anchor.

Many said De Castro’s opinion was “uncalled for” and “irresponsible, “ and that he could have just chosen to say congratulations.

The highly anticipated wedding

Over the weekend, the romantic wedding of Mendoza and Atayde was the talk of the town. They exchanged “I do’s” at the Alphaland Baguio Mountain Lodges in a wedding attended by over 400 guests composed of their family and friends from in and out of the entertainment industry.

The couple later flew to Bali, Indonesia where they were spotted at the wedding of Maja Salvador and businessman Rambo Nuñez.
