Eleven-time Grammy winner Taylor Swift once again broke the internet after releasing the most anticipated music video for Lavender Haze.

With its alluringly dreamy visuals, fans can’t help but immerse themselves in this sultry pop beat inspired by Taylor’s longtime Lover, British actor Joe Alwyn.

Prior to the release of the record-breaking Midnights album, Taylor revealed the inspiration behind this romantic, written-in-the-stars kind of love song in an Instagram reel.

Taylor began by narrating that she first encountered the term “lavender haze” while watching the American drama series Mad Men (2007). The singer-songwriter explained that upon looking it up, she learned the term was used in the 50’s to describe someone in an “all-encompassing love glow.”

“I guess, theoretically, when you’re in the ‘lavender haze,’ you’ll do anything to stay there and not let people bring you down off of that cloud,” she said.

She also referenced her relationship with Joe and how the world puts weight on it by creating “weird rumors.” Taylor said Lavender Haze was a song about “the act of ignoring that stuff to protect the real stuff,” in the same way that the couple guards their relationship.

“I think that a lot of people have to deal with this now, not just like ‘public figures,’ because we live in the era of social media, and if the world finds out if you’re in love with somebody they’re going to weigh in on it,” said Taylor. “Like my relationship for six years we’ve had to dodge weird rumors, tabloid stuff, and we just ignore it.”

Taylor and Joe’s relationship has been under the radar since they started dating in 2016, after Kim Kardashian released Snapchat “proof” to discredit the pop singer during her feud with Kanye West.

According to Taylor, these lyrics of Lavender Haze pertained to how Joe “carefully” dealt with all the interviews he had that discussed his relationship with her.

During the previous years, Joe always made sure to dodge personal questions regarding their relationship to protect what he and Taylor shared behind closed doors.

“I think because the precedent was set—that our choice is to be private and not feed that side of things—the more you do that, hopefully, the more that intrusiveness or intrigue drops off,” he said in an interview with GQ magazine.

Meanwhile, these lyrics are references to all the engagement rumors that came up since the beginning of their relationship.

While Taylor has not worn any engagement ring, Joe always made it clear that whether they are engaged or not, he will not speak about it.
