Jiu-jitsu fighter Meggie Ochoa wins 2nd PH gold in Asian Games

by Bryan Gadingan

MEGGIE Ochoa, a Filipina jiu-jitsu fighter, has won the Philippines’ second gold medal in the 19th Asian Games in Hangzhou, China.

Ochoa had a high fever for three days, which may have contributed to her lack of confidence heading into her first match.

Despite having minimal expectation going into the competition, the two-time world champion was able to shake off the jitters and win gold in women’s jiu-jitsu.

She won the -48kg final against Balqees Abdulla of the United Arab Emirates on Thursday in the 19th Asian Games.

Ochoa advanced to the finals after defeating Nazgul Rakhayeva of Kazakhstan in the quarterfinals through submission. In the semifinals, she faced Thailand’s Pechrada Kacie Tan where she won by points, 4-2.

Ochoa won the world championships in Sweden in 2018 and Abu Dhabi last year, and now has three Asian championships under her belt.

In a press conference following her latest victory, Ochoa could not hold back her tears as she shared her experience in this year’s Asian Games, which did not start well.

“It was really overwhelming. A lot happened on my way here [to the gold medal win.] Until yesterday, I had the flu. So, I thought I would not be able to fight,” Ochoa said. “Then, in the semifinals, I pulled my hip.”

Despite her difficulties, Ochoa recognizes the importance of representing her country in the Asian Games. “This is different, the Asian Games. It is very important for the country,” she said.

Ochoa is the first Filipina to win gold in the 19th Asian Games, and the second after world No. 2 pole vaulter EJ Obiena, who won gold on his own.

The Philippines now possesses 14 medals, including two gold, two silver, and 10 bronze. The Philippines currently ranks 22nd in the 19th Asian Games medal tally, thanks to Ochoa’s and Obiena’s wins.
