James becomes first NBA player to reach 39,000 points

by Bryan Gadingan

LEBRON James continues to show that he has a lot left in the tank, as he achieved another milestone in his historic basketball career on Wednesday (Manila Time) during their game against the Utah Jazz.

Last season, James broke another Laker legend, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar’s All-Time record of 38,387 points. Most basketball fans, including former NBA players, assumed the record would never be broken.

With 10.9 seconds left in the third quarter, James sunk his record-breaking point on a 21-foot turnaround at Crypto.com Arena. This gave him 16 points in the period, 36 for the game, and 38,388 for his legendary career.

Last season, however, his record-breaking night was marred by a 133-130 loss to a young Oklahoma Thunders team.  This time, the King and his squad made certain that his historic night was not spoiled by defeat.

Now the NBA’s all-time leading scorer, James, 38, also became the first player in league history to reach 39,000 points early in the first quarter.

“I got congratulated by my teammates and coaches, (but) I haven’t had an opportunity to really wrap my head around what that means,” James said. “There’s been so many great players that came across this league since the beginning of time, and so many great scorers. To be able to accomplish something that’s the first of anything, I think that’s always pretty cool. It’s a wild moment, that’s for sure.”

In his 21st season, James has maintained his elite level of play, averaging 26.4 points, 8.2 rebounds, and 6.5 assists. At his current rate and assuming good health, James could reach 40,000 points by the end of the season.

Today: Lakers vs Dallas

On back-to-back nights, the Los Angeles Lakers hosted another game, this time against the Dallas Mavericks. The home squad, however, came short of a comeback triumph against the visiting club, 101-104.

The Lakers rallied from a 20-point deficit to take a 101-99 lead with 1:16 remaining in the fourth quarter. With 21.6 seconds remaining, Kyrie Irving hit a clutch three-pointer, and the Lakers were unable to score to end the game.

LeBron James led the Lakers in a losing effort with 26 points, nine rebounds, and seven assists. Backed by Austin Reaves’ 17 points, six rebounds, and six assists.

Luka Doncic, on the other hand, put up 30 points, 12 rebounds, and eight assists, falling two assists short of a triple-double. Former King teammate Kyrie Irving contributed 28 points and six rebounds.
