Is Selena Gomez retiring from music?

by Joanna Deala

IT was in August 2023 when American pop star Selena Gomez revealed that she had been working on a new album called “SG3,” making fans excited.

But Selanators were surprised by a hint Gomez dropped during her appearance in the latest episode of the “SmartLess” podcast. Here, she looked back on how her singing career began and shared that she wanted to focus on her acting career instead, according to a report by Deadline.

“I started having a lot of fun with music and then touring was really fun. But I was doing my TV show at the same time [“Wizards of Waverly Place”] and I just found it really fun so I just kept going but the older I get, the more I’m kind of like, I would like to find something to just settle on,” she told the “SmartLess” hosts.

If she would pick one lane, Gomez said: “I do feel like I have one more album in me but I would probably choose acting.”

The 31-year-old celebrity started her show business career as a child actress, portraying the role of Gianna in the ’90s children’s television series “Barney & Friends.”

This opened more acting opportunities for Gomez. She got a breakthrough in 2007 when she was cast as Alex Russo, the lead role in the Disney Channel series “Wizards of Waverly Place.”

It was during her “Wizards of Waverly Place” days when she began venturing into music.

She branched out to the music scene as part of the pop rock band Selena Gomez & the Scene with their debut album “Kiss & Tell” in 2009. Gomez then pursued a solo music career until she solidified her name in the industry.

“I wanted to be an actress. I never really intended on being a singer full-time but apparently that hobby turned into something else,” Gomez told “SmartLess” podcast, as quoted by Deadline.

There is no release date yet for “SG3” but Gomez revealed in December that the album would come “in [two] months.” This was her reply to a fan who asked her about the album on Instagram.

In August 2023, Gomez released her latest song “Single Soon” as Selenators awaited “SG3.” In a post on X (formerly Twitter), the singer thanked those who supported her single.

“Thank you guys for all the love on Single Soon!!! It’s a playful anthem about being comfortable in your own skin and loving your own company… and it’s also really fun to dance to!” she said.

On top of being a singer and actress, Gomez also established her own cosmetics line called Rare Beauty.
