“Inside Out 2”, highest-grossing movie of the year to date

PIXAR’s latest movie, “Inside Out 2” is the first movie of 2024 to cross $1 billion at the global box office, in record time for any animated film having reached this in only 19 days since its release.

“We’re absolutely thrilled to have reached this phenomenal milestone in record time, and it once again proves that global audiences will come out for a great movie,” Tony Chambers, Executive Vice-President for Theatrical Distribution said in a press release written by the official Walt Disney Company website.

Chambers added that the film’s success is a testament to Pixar’s creativity and the liveliness of moviegoing in general.

Prior to being the highest-grossing movie to date this year, the emotional film made $294.2 million worldwide for its opening, ranking it the second-highest Walt Disney film right behind “Frozen 2” and third in the highest-grossing animated film with the “Super Mario Bros. Movie” taking the lead.

The animated film quickly surpassed its predecessor, “Inside Out” which made $90 million during its opening in 2015 before totaling $858 million worldwide.

“Inside Out 2” takes place a year after the events of the first movie where the five basic emotions come to terms with one another. Here, there are four more complicated emotions that get added into the mix as the now 13-year-old Riley Andersen goes through puberty.

According to Pete Doctor, Chief Creative Officer of Pixar and director of the first film, the creation of the sequel was caused by the effects of the first one, stating that it continuously has “become part of the conversation.”

Doctor added that the movie was able to influence people’s perspectives about their parenting and their own existence and that finding out about this influenced him to consider the possibility of adding more to the film’s world.

“You might think our movies are about cars or bugs or monsters, but they’re really about us at the core. They’re about our experiences as human beings that we hope will then resonate with the audience,” Doctor said.

Philippine Box Office shared last week a post announcing that “Inside Out 2” had entered the country’s Top 10 Highest Grossing Films, reached 2nd Biggest Animation of All Time (behind Frozen 2) and the Biggest Film of 2024 with P649 million.
