CHRISTMAS has been labeled as the season of giving, thus—it became a tradition for us to give and receive gifts from the people who are close to us.

While a lot of Gen Zs can instantly feel contented upon receiving blue bills as part of their Christmas gift, have you ever thought on what exactly makes the ideal gift for this generation?

For this article—RepublicAsia had reached out to six Gen Z, on which they shared their ideal Christmas present for this holiday and their reason behind it.

Something useful

For Lyanne, a Senior High School student from Sophia School stated that her ideal Christmas gift is something useful and something that she could use for every day.

“My ideal Christmas gift is something that should be useful and I could use it everyday so for now i need boots since my boots just broke- and its the only shoes that I wear.” Lyanne stated.

In terms of usefulness, it wasn’t just Lyanne who wishes to receive something that she can use.

For Erich–a nursing student from Our Lady of Fatima university wish to receive an iPad for this Christmas season. Her reason behind this is for the convenience especially when she’s reviewing her lessons that contains up to 70 powerpoint slides.

“Because when I study, I need to print out all of the powerpoints  just to use it as my reviewer. Although writing it though hands is not bad, it’s just that the powerpoint lessons tends to contain 50 to 70 slides. So the reason behind it is more on convenience.”

While the previous answers from the two interviewees contains an ideal product for their ideal Christmas gift, in the case of Bryan—a Junior Writer in RepublicAsia stated he would like to receive something that will be beneficial to him, either for work or everyday use.

“Personally, I’m not looking for something big or expensive; I just want something that will be beneficial to me. That said, a perfect Christmas gift is anything that can be valuable to me, whether it’s for work or for everyday use. Of course, I don’t want to waste the giver’s hard-earned money; I want his or her gift to be worthwhile.”

Something functional

For some people—receiving something useful can fill-up their contentment but in the case of Iñigo—a freshman college student stated that his gift preferences shifted as he transitioned to adulthood.

“As I transition to adulthood, my gift preferences have changed. Now, I prefer things such as coffee mugs, socks, and pens – some may call it boring, but I call it functionality.”

In terms of functionality, receiving money for the holiday is something that Cyrus is looking forward into and his reason behind it was due to flexibility and functionality.

“I’m not speaking for my personal thought but come to think about it. What attracts this generation more than the sweet smell of capitalism?”

In terms of receiving money, James—a Senior High School student stated that he’d like to receive angpao as well.

“Because when you receive angpao, you already know what it is. It’s money.” He stated.

Understanding the Christmas sprit

When asked about their ideal Christmas gifts, people are to answer a specific item that they want to receive for the holidays. Meanwhile in the case of MC, a freshman college student in Lyceum of the Philippines University stated that she would like to instead understand the spirit of Christmas.

For her, the holidays signifies joy and tradition and that she grew up believing that Christmas season was only meant for her whether she’ll receive a gift from Santa or not or how much her ninongs and ninangs will give her this year.

“I understand that its more than just that’ its the tradition that makes the holidays golden, completing simbang gabi, making fruit salad, eating hamon, puto bungbong—and simply enjoying with your loved ones as we welcome the new years.”

“To me, that absolutely matters, even if I wasn’t having a good year. May Christmas be my happiest.” she added.
