Ice Seguerra tells Alanis Morisette: ‘You were my hero’

by Izel Abanilla

Soon after opening for the Philippine concert of Alanis Morisette, OPM singer and former child star Ice Seguerra declared that the Grammy-winning artist was his ‘’hero.”

On Instagram, Seguerra posted a picture of them together in black and white, showing the Pagdating ng Panahon singer obviously starstruck while talking to his idol.

Seguerra accompanied it with a lengthy, heartfelt letter to the legend, whose music has been his rock throughout his challenging teen years. He laid out specific songs that made an impact at specific times in her life.

“Thank you so much for making time to meet us today,” he said.

“When I told you you were my hero, I wanted to let you know that Mary Jane made me feel better during rough times in my teenage years,” he shared.

“Perfect was my companion when I felt like I wasn’t good enough,” he went on.

“During my late 20s, You Learn made me feel like all the sh*t I had to endure made me stronger,”

“Now that I’m almost in my 40s, Thank You sums up my gratitude for my life journey,” he said.

Mary Jane, Perfect, and You Learn were songs from Alanis’ legendary Jagged Little Pill album, while Thank You is among the most recognizable songs from her fourth studio album, Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie.

Seguerra went on to tell Morissette that he had been singing her songs long before he had a music career. Seguerra, formerly known as Aiza Seguerra, had a stellar music career after transitioning from a teen star to a singer.

“I have been singing your songs way before I had a music career, and since finding my way as a singer and musician, I have grown to appreciate your songs on a deeper level,” he said.

He also shared that he was in the audience when the 49-year-old rock icon first came to the Philippines on November 23, 1996, for a concert at the Big Dome. It was here that Seguerra shared how he was in disbelief that he had opened for one of the biggest singers of the 1990s.

“I was in the audience when you first came to the Philippines; I watched the JLP anniversary tour a few years back in California. I bought concert tickets when it was announced that you were coming here. I just wanted to relive the songs that are a big part of my core. But I never thought I would open the concert and meet you,” he said.

At the end of his letter, Seguerra thanked the singer for two nights of mega ‘90s nostalgia.

“Thank you for the past two nights that we [got] to sing the songs with you, that has been our comfort, and inspiration for the past 25++ years. We grew along with your songs…,” he said.

“We are grateful to have you here in the Philippines. You and your band were awe-inspiring,” he added.

“Have a great tour!!! Your forever fan, Ice.’’

Jagged Little Pill concert

After 27 years, the Canadian-American singer returned to the country for the Philippine leg of her Jagged Little Pill concert in celebration of her chart-topping, multi-awarded album.

For two nights, the Philippines was transported back to the golden era of the ‘90s on August 1 and 2, 2023, at the Mall of Asia Arena.

Alanis has given the world some of the most influential generational hits like Head Over Feet, Ironic, and You Oughta Know, among many others.

At a time of boy bands and cheesy pop music, Morisette stood out with her signature rock vibe and cleverly frank lyricism.

Morisette canceled her Manila concert three times—in 2020, 2021, and 2022—because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
