How did Rihanna become a billionaire?

by Ron Poblete

DID you know Rihanna is worth $1.4 billion?

Rihanna is slated to perform in the NFL National Football League Super Bowl LVII halftime show this February.

She recently posted photos of her wearing her new Savage X Fenty intimates line to take advantage of the huge anticipation for her performance in one of the biggest sports events in the world.

This lingerie line is one of her ventures that has made her one of the richest entertainers in the world.

Billboard said last year that the Diamonds singer became the youngest self-made billionaire, with a net worth of $1.4 billion.

How did she do it?

Music career

Since 2005 when she first broke into the music scene, Rihanna has sold 60 million albums and 215 million digital tracks worldwide, earning a significant amount of money from record sales, streaming, and touring.

This made her one of the best selling artists of all time.

She released 8 studio albums during her 17-year career. Her first three did phenomenally well, with her debut Music of the Sun earning a gold album.

The second, A Girl Like Me got a platinum and her third, Good Girl Gone Bad, went triple platinum.

A gold album is given when an artist has sold 500,000 units while a platinum is given for a minimum 1 millions units sold.

Fenty Beauty

RiRi started Fenty Beauty in 2017, a makeup line that quickly became popular for its inclusive range of shades, high-quality products, and innovative formulas.

Within the first few weeks of launch, Fenty Beauty generated over $72 million in sales, and in the first year it had over $570 million in revenue.

The brand’s popularity has continued to grow, and in 2019, it was estimated to be worth $3 billion.

Savage X Fenty

Her lingerie line, launched in 2018, has become a popular and successful brand. It has been praised for its inclusivity and body positivity, and has been worn by celebrities and influencers.

The brand was reported to have grown quickly since it began. The company had $50 million in revenue in the first year of its launch and was valued at $1 billion.

Savage X Fenty expanded its offerings to include other products, such as loungewear, sleepwear, and activewear, which have been well-received by customers.

The new line is on display on the pop star’s Instagram page. She is now heavily promoting it in time for the Super Bowl festivities.

The line has also been praised for its sustainability efforts, as some of its products are made from recycled materials.

Fenty Skin

In 2020, Rihanna started Fenty Skin, her skincare line which quickly became popular for its clean and sustainable ingredients.

It was reported that Fenty Skin generated over $100 million in sales within the first month of launch, and it’s estimated to be worth $200 million.

The brand was recognized for its commitment to sustainability, as its products are packaged in eco-friendly, recyclable materials and its ingredients are sustainably sourced.

Fashion

Rihanna has also dabbled in fashion, launching a luxury fashion line, Fenty, in collaboration with LVMH Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton.

Acting

RiRi also appeared in a number of films and TV shows, earning money from her acting roles.

She made her acting debut in the film “Bring It On: All or Nothing” in 2006 and subsequently appeared in a number of film and television shows.

She starred in the science fiction film “Battleship,”  the animated film Happy Feet Two, and Home as the voice of Gratuity “Tip” Tucci.

Her biggest film to date is Ocean’s 8 in 2018 where she starred alongside Sandra Bullock, Cate Blanchett, and Anne Hathaway.

In 2019, she starred in the crime film “Guava Island” alongside Donald Glover.

Endorsements

Rihanna has also earned money from endorsement deals with various brands, such as Puma, Dior, and Samsung.

Business savvy

Rihanna’s unprecedented success can be attributed to her strong brand identity which she uses as her guide in making decisions.

She has also taken on the mantle of promoting diversity and inclusivity as a policy in developing her brands. This has established goodwill and a positive image for her business.

With her strong understanding of the market, huge digital presence, and strategic partnerships, sky’s the limit for this first time billionaire.
