Hair guide for ‘lagkit’ dry season

by RepublicAsia

YOUR skin might be soaking wet under the sun, but have you ever wondered how your hair could get toasted from extreme heat?

Even though it might seem like your hair cannot sense the direct heat, your crowning glory’s condition speaks volumes.

The intense heat being experienced in the Philippines intensifies the struggles of achieving a fresh summer hair look.

And so, stepping out does not mean that you need only sunscreen. In fact, you also need protection for your hair, an essential during this lagkit summer season (which everyone hopes will end soon).

Your hair bestie, Dyson Airstrait!

Filipino celebrity hairstylist Renz Pangilinan said that one way to prevent hair damage is to use appropriate hair products and tools to achieve perfectly hydrated, smooth and bouncy hair.

At the launch of Dyson’s recently released hair tool, the Dyson Airstrait, Pangilinan was a guest and he experienced the trendsetting hair machine.

Using the Dyson Airstrait, you can easily style your hair from wet to a finished style with just one machine. This avoids hair damage caused by hot plates, which are commonly found in traditional hair straighteners and hair dryers.

Its features also include an LCD screen, lock feature, and auto-pause that automatically pauses the machine after three minutes. And voila, the machine will restart the airflow.

Not only does it save time but it gives you a quick and prepped hairstyle needed this season.

Time to save for hair and scalp sunscreen

Yes, it’s definitely a thing and you should start adding hair sunscreen to your routine!

Hair sunscreens are typically in powder and spray formula, making it easily absorbed by the hair and scalp. Like other sunscreens, scalp sunscreen products are less greasy, protect hairline areas and the scalp, while reducing the risk of skin issues and sunburn.

Unlike sunscreens for the face and body, hair sunscreen comes in different forms like sprays, serums, oils and creams, according to Drs. Bunag and Belo. These hair products contain Vitamin E and UV filters, nourishing hair and shielding it from damage.

It is recommended to use hair and scalp sunscreen when exposed to direct sunlight. Prolonged exposure to the sun can damage hair-pigment molecules and strip hair color, causing hair to become brittle and more prone to damage.

Just like your body can get burned under the sun, the same goes for your scalp, especially in thin or parted areas.

Use hats for extra sun protection

Of course, choosing a suitable hat is a must.

Hats should be wide enough to cover your face and hair from the sun’s heat. However, synthetic materials could be another cause of damaged hair. So, choosing breathable and natural materials for your hat, such as wool or cotton, is advisable.

Make sure to avoid tight-fitting hats, as this restricts the blood flow to your scalp area, contributing to damaged hair.

Fun fact: there are actually hats and clothes with ultraviolet protection factor (UPF)!
