‘Godzilla egg’ on Japan’s shore baffles locals

by Joyce Remo

A “Godzilla egg,” “Dragon ball,” “mooring buoy,” and an object “from outer space” has mysteriously appeared on a beach in Japan and authorities are bewildered as to what it really is and how it got there.

Following a report from a concerned local, Japanese authorities have sent the police and bomb squad to examine the mysterious sphere that washed up on the shores of Enushuma beach in Hamamatsu, Japan.

A local runner also told the international media that the metal orb has been there for a while and he has tried pushing it, but to no avail.

“I tried to push it but it wouldn’t budge,” he told Japanese broadcaster NHK in an interview.

The orb, which is believed to be made of iron, is about 1.5 meters (4.9ft) wide, is said to be hollow and poses no threat according to authorities who have conducted an x-ray examination of the object.

Screen grabbed from an NHK footage.

However, the Japanese authorities are yet to disclose what the object is, although some Japanese netizens have pointed out that it was obviously a buoy or a floating device.

While speculations regarding the metal sphere have been arising since its discovery, the local civil engineering office said it “considers it to be a foreign-made buoy.”

Mark Inall, an oceanographer at the Scottish Association for Marine Science, confirmed this, saying that the metal sphere is “very recognizable.”

“We use (them) to keep instruments floating in the ocean. They often wash up on the coast of Scotland,” he told BBC in an interview.

Inall also added that it came as a surprise that local authorities were not able to identify it more quickly. But he also acknowledged that the general public may not have known what a buoy often looks like.

“May nag-aabang sa’yo, ‘di ba?” Yes! The wait is definitely.

“It could be confused for a World War 2 mine … but those would have spikes sticking out of them,” he added.

These objects, as per Inall, can float in the ocean for decades, which causes them to lose their markings and get rusty.

Meanwhile, the mysterious sphere, which was termed by the locals as “Godzilla’s egg,” has been removed from the scene by the local authorities.

They said that it would be stored “for a certain period of time” and would later be “disposed of.”

This foreign-made buoy heightened the general anxiety of the locals in Japan as it was discovered amid the spotting of foreign objects, which has been taking place since the US shot down an alleged Chinese spy balloon earlier this month. The balloon has been spotted three times since 2019.
