Truth seekers. Truth speakers. Truth defenders.
Nerlanie Gopio sees journalism as a tool that could prevent power abuse by simply unveiling the truth.
She serves as the current Editor-in-Chief of The Vanguard Publication, the official student publication of North Eastern Mindanao State University.
To get to know her better, Republicasia asked Nerlanie a few questions about her journey as a student journalist fighting for press freedom in the country.
Behind the Persona
Tell me about yourself as a student journalist and your life outside of publication.
I have been a journalist since 2017. As members of the student publication, we ensure the validity of information that we disseminate to the masses. I am a fourth year student taking up Bachelor of Secondary Education Major in English. The only difference between me as a student journalist and being outside the university is that I am liberated in a way that I just go with the flow; I ain’t pressured by criticism, just living my life like how it used to.
Defining Moment
Tell me about that ‘defining moment’ that made you pursue journalism and continue to do so.
Curiosity. That’s what pushed me to be a student journalist because I have always been curious what it’s like to be one. However, the defining moment that made me continue to pursue journalism was when I was qualified in my chosen course. It’s as if there was a voice telling me to continue because at the end of the day, I know this will help me build my confidence and grow.
Generation Voice
What do you think is the most pressing issue that affects press freedom in the country nowadays? What do you think are the significant roles of young journalists in advancing genuine national press freedom?
As a young journalist, I think the most pressing issue that affects press freedom nowadays is the oppression of voices, as well as misinformation. I think the significant role of journalists like me in advancing genuine press freedom is through raising awareness about how important a free press is in a democratic country. This includes promoting transparency and preventing abuses of power.
Powerful Quote
Tell me about your mantra as a journalist. What message can you give to the aspiring journalist of the new generation?
A message I can give to aspiring journalists of the new generation is to always be curious. Never be afraid of taking the risk of trying something new because being a journalist means you have to immerse yourself a lot from learning mindset, so never stop learning.
