Truth seekers. Truth speakers. Truth defenders.
Kylene Ursal vows to be the voice of the people by only providing the truth.
She serves as the current Editor-in-Chief of UMALOHOKAN, the official student publication of the University of Cebu.
To get to know her better, Republicasia asked Kylene a few questions about her journey as a student journalist fighting for press freedom in the country.
Behind the Persona
Tell me about yourself as a student journalist and your life outside of publication.
Three years have passed since I became the editor-in-chief of the student publication of the University of Cebu-Banilad, UMALOHOKAN. Despite having less prior background in journalism, I established myself as a student journalist through dedication and perseverance. Today, I continue to learn and get better with each passing time. As an introvert, writing is the sole outlet for me to communicate with the world. UMALOHOKAN is more than just journalism; it is also an embodiment of art as a unique form of communication. It became an outlet for people like me to engage with others through writing. While I barely get noticed in class as I only sit quietly in my chair and interact less than everyone else, outside the four corners of the classroom, I am somebody. Being a student journalist is a walk of fulfillment; it enables me to carry on what I started in grade school as a writer and a leader. Apart from this, I get to meet and work with different individuals and serve as the voice of the students and the school community. For me, being surrounded by the ones who share your aspirations and vision is a consolation in what deems a distant world. Despite the fact that I lead the student publication, I do not feel overburdened. I struggle less because of the people around me. In UMALOHOKAN, we are a family. We journey together and learn from each other. And I would not be present here today if not for and because of them. I believe this is not only about me; this is about us. We may come from different roots, yet we are here for a common reason—to be the voice of truth and triumph.
Defining Moment
Tell me about that ‘defining moment’ that made you pursue journalism and continue to do so.
Journalism is a platform where diverse voices are heard and an engaged society is created. Writing has always given me consolation when days get heavy and dark. Through journalism, I return the same consolation to others and serve as their voice.
Generation Voice
What do you think is the most pressing issue that affects press freedom in the country nowadays? What do you think are the significant roles of young journalists in advancing genuine national press freedom?
Censorship is a detriment to press freedom not only in the Philippines but around the world. It limits the freedom of expression, speech, and press by restricting words, symbols, and art, often resulting in misinformation. However, the youth today leads a path of journalism with unwavering dedication. Young journalists perceive freedom of the press as a pillar of democracy and thus strongly advocate for national press freedom. They lead the rise of digital journalism where student publications develop websites and social media accounts to reach a larger audience. Through this, young journalists develop a voice in the community. And as the voice gets heard by many people, it grows louder and louder, amplifying veritable press freedom even across nations.
Powerful Quote
Tell me about your mantra as a journalist. What message can you give to the aspiring journalist of the new generation?
Start becoming the change today. Be the change you seek because you can only get better in the presence of change.
