FILIPINO-Canadian teenager Tyson Venegas has made it to the top 12 of the singing competition American Idol, after dazzling judges and audiences with his original song 180.
The 17-year-old Venegas capped off his advancement to the next phase of the show with a performance of Elton John’s Don’t Let the Sun Go Down on Me.

On Instagram, Venegas gave thanks for the support and asked them to stay tuned for next week when the contest holds its first coast-to-coast vote.

Prior to the Top 12 announcement, Venegas sang his original song 180.

His performance earned glowing praise from judges Katy Perry, Lionel Richie, and Luke Bryan.

Richie blurted out “I love it!” as Venegas sang while playing the piano.

Venegas’ song 180 is a message to the younger and older generations to allow change to happen and not just adhere to traditions.

His lines, “What good are thoughts and prayers if we can’t stomach a solution? The institutions of this union can’t even stop kids from shootin’ other humans,” leaves a powerful message that will surely make listeners reflect.
