How does an account get hacked?

In the article released by National Cybersecurity Alliance in 2023, they confirmed that some accounts got hacked through Phishing.

This is when the cybercriminals use deceptive social media posts, emails,  texts, phone calls, or even DMs that tempt you to click on it or download a malicious attachment. Falling for these bait allows hackers to gain access to your device or accounts.

Another hacking way could also be data breach, it is when the hacker gains access to your personal sensitive or confidential information, including personal data and corporate data and reveals your passwords and username.

In the Philippines alone, data breaches reached up to 0.14 million during the fourth quarter of 2023.

How to Prevent Hacking?

As the increase of hacking is undeniably, with the country being ranked fourth among the most targeted countries in the world by hackers, you have a power to prevent cyber criminals.

Here some steps to prevent getting your account hacked:

  1. Use a lengthy, complex, and unique password on your account. You can use at least twelve characters long with the combination of letters, numbers, and symbols (like % or $).
  2. Multi-factor authentication (MFA), also called 2-factor authentication. This adds another layer of security beyond your password.
  3. Educate yourself in spotting Phishing messages, which are sometimes designed to induce urgency or panic. Review and read through the message and the sender.
  4. Enable automatic updates. Install software updates, this ensures that you have a strongest security feature, and keeps you informed and protected without needing to manually check.
  5. Make sure to use secure internet communications. Avoiding websites with invalid certificates can save you from hackers specifically if you’ll access a personal account or will provide personal information.

The recent numerous cyber attacks signifies security vulnerabilities, yet with a minimal knowledge about hacking such as recognizing phishing attempts or understanding data breach can protect your account from hackers.
