Comfort foods to enjoy this sweater weather

by Izel Abanilla

Isn’t this the perfect time to be in those cozy sweaters while enjoying a cup of hot chocolate by the window?

The country has officially entered the rainy season, and that means colder weather and a whole lot of rain and wind—not to mention cuddles.

One way to warm up during inclement weather is through food.

Here are some fan favorite Pinoy food to soothe those rainy-day blues.

  1. Sinigang

When it’s raining outside, expect that every Filipino household will prepare sinigang for lunch or dinner. May it be pork, beef, fish, shrimp, or even chicken, its aromatic tamarind-based soup soothes that hungry tummy in all ways.

In fact, sinigang has been repeatedly recognized as among the best soups in the world according to Taste Atlas. Paired with plain rice, this balanced meal is all you need to love the vibe of a rainy day.

  1. Tinola

Another rainy-day Pinoy favorite is Tinola, a chicken stew with a ginger base. It’s perfect for the rainy weather because of its light, gingery taste. Tinola has long been part of Filipino culture and cuisine; it was even featured in Dr. Jose Rizal’s first book, Noli Me Tangere.

  1. Nilaga

Nilaga is a hearty soup often made with pork or beef that offers a refreshing, soothing taste to the hungry foodie. Even in the stifling summer heat, nilaga can be served, but have it on those cold, rainy days, and it’ll elevate its effect to a whole new level.

  1. Monggo bean soup

It doesn’t need to be Friday to serve monggo bean soup. A serving full of goodness, it can be enjoyed using pork, shrimp, chicken, or simply its plain soup base. Plus, the ingredients for this hearty meal are very economical, so it would not break the bank.

  1. Champorado

One popular rainy-day merienda is the full chocolatey goodness of champorado. Served with dried fish, rainy days just could not get any better.

  1. Arroz Caldo

Just like champorado, arroz caldo is another Pinoy favorite afternoon snack. Even if it’s usually served as a merienda, it can give the feeling of a full meal because of the main ingredient, rice. Best with chicken, arroz caldo is a taste of heaven on this rain-filled earth.

  1. Sopas

The list would not be complete without sopas or milk soup. Usually made with chicken, pasta noodles, carrots, and celery, this refreshing soup can make those thunderous rains feel relaxing.

  1. Dinuguan and puto

The winning pair of dinuguan and puto is an all-around meal. It can be served as a main dish or a cozy afternoon snack. Add fried fish, and the fight is over.

  1. Hot chocolate

After any snack, it’s nice to stay by the window, lay in bed, or simply sit outside enjoying the nature view beating the chilling cold with a cup of hot chocolate. Nothing can be more relaxing than that.

  1. Coffee

Just like your hot chocolate, you can have you coffee your refreshing cup of coffee while feeling the blowing cold winds and the rain.
