Classic go-to songs when you want to move on, but your heart says kapit pa

by Izel Abanilla

WE’VE all been broken-hearted at some point in our lives.

We know how it feels to have our hearts crushed because what we thought was forever did not last.

We’ve all felt angry, jealous, insecure, and at times vengeful, and we’ve all wanted to forget and move on from everything.

But admit it, even though we might want to move forward, we also secretly wish that our special someone would come back.

The new generation mothers

In traditional practice, especially in Filipino culture, women are expected.

We shouldn’t see this situation as unfortunate. It’s called experience. Pain is not a curse or punishment, because it molds us to become better, stronger and wiser.

In the meantime, we could cry our hearts out with the help of these classic songs that say exactly how it feels when we want to move on, but we can’t help but hold on.

  1. Someday (Nina)

“Someday, someone’s gonna love me, the way I wanted you to need me, someday, someone’s gonna take your place.”

This line could not say it any more perfectly.

After a heartbreak, we’ve all sworn to ourselves that the next one to come along will give us the love we deserve.

But we know very well that the song is about someone who’s been badly broken and desperately wanting to move on, but still in love with the cause of her pain.

Relate?

  1. Huwag Ka Nang Magbabalik (Roselle Nava)

“Pakiusap ko sa ‘yo huwag ka nang magbabalik, ‘pagkat itong puso ko ay sa ‘yo pa rin nasasabik.”

It’s not November, but we’re afraid that zombies might resurrect.

Since we know zombies to be people who come back after leaving, there’s this fear that the moment they return, they will still have that power over us just as they did before.

And letting someone back in gives them the capacity to hurt us again.

So we must think hard. Because as Roselle exclaimed in the bridge of this song, “’Di ko kayang pigilin ang sigaw nitong damdamin, labis man akong sinaktan ikaw pa rin ang aking mahal.”

  1. You made me stronger (Regine Velasquez)

“You’ve taught me everything, from falling in love, to letting go of a lie. Yes, you’ve made me stronger, baby, by saying goodbye.”

Congratulations to those who embody the essence of this song. It means they’ve moved on and have gone past their pain.

But while others sing this song in the hopes of eventually getting there, some of us actually feel the opposite.

Just fake it so that we’ll make it.

  1. Burnout (Sugarfree)

“O kay tagal din kitang minahal.”

One of the most fitting songs to sing when we’re in the middle of our pain, but holding on all the same, is Sugarfree’s “Burnout.”

It could be for a longtime ex or a best friend we’ve secretly loved, and when we know that unloving this person just isn’t possible.

The song ends with the line “Oh, kay tagal din kitang mamahalin.” It’s just like our love, undying.

  1. Migraine (Moonstar 88)

“Asan ba ko sayo? Aasa ba ko sa’yo?”

Can this line get any more relatable?

Besides this line, the intro has an equally powerful punch with the reminder, “Oo nga pala, hindi nga pala tayo.”

Those of us who find ourselves singing this song are probably asking if it’s time to move on or to still hold on. Either way, it shows we’re hurting.

  1. Sana Maulit Muli (Lea Salonga)

“Kung kaya kong iwanan ka, di na sana aasa pa.”

Yes, we’ve once felt that.

This overwhelming pain tells us it’s time to move on, but our hearts agree when Lea sings, “Mahal pa rin kita…”

  1. Before I let You Go (Freestyle)

This has got to be the ultimate moving-on-but-holding-on song.

While it says that one is ready to move on, it also acknowledges that no one else will measure up to the other person.

“You’ll be forever in my heart and I know that no one else will do, yeah…

So before I let you go, I want to say I love you…”

  1. Dahan (December Avenue)

“Dahan-dahan mong bitawan puso kong ‘di makalaban…”

Remember when Vice Ganda talked about begging someone to break it off with him slowly so that he’ll get used to the idea of him leaving?

This song is the perfect soundtrack to that situation. It is one of the most painful songs ever, and we can all imagine someone down on his knees begging for time to prepare his heart and mind to accept that his loved one will be leaving him.

  1. Let Me Be The One (Jimmy Bondoc)

“Let me be the one to break it up so you won’t have to make excuses.”

We thank Jimmy Bondoc for making a song that perfectly describes how our selfless hearts choose to just set the other free rather than letting them suffer and be unhappy while with us.

Before it all ends, we say, “I’m telling you I love you one last time and goodbye.”

  1. Paubaya (Moira)

If we know that someone else has our significant other’s heart, chances are, we’ll be spending tearful, sleepless nights with Moira wallowing in the lines “Saan natigil ang pagiging totoo, sa tuwing mababanggit na mahal mo ako? Ba’t ‘di mo inamin na mayro’ng iba? Ako ang kayakap, pero isip mo siya.”

Yes, we have to move on, but we know very well that our hearts still belong to those who did us wrong.
