Chilling adaptation of Bob Ong novel to premier at Amazon Prime

by Joyce Remo

The live film adaptation for Bob Ong’s novel Ang Mga Kaibigan ni Mama Susan will be having its international premier at Amazon Prime next month, three years after the movie was first teased.

The Filipino horror film will be available at the platform starting May 18, as announced by Prime Video Philippines.

“Nakakakilabot, nakakagimbal, at mapapaisip! Malapit nang mabuklat ang mga mensahe ni Mama Susan!” the streaming service wrote.

Directed by award-winning horror director Chino Roño, the film’s ensemble includes Joshua Garcia, Angie Ferro, Kelvin Miranda, Patrick Quiroz, Miko Gallardo, and Henz Villaraiz.

Roño is also behind the films Patayin sa Sindak si Barbara (1995), Feng Shui (2004), Sukob (2006), Tenement 2 (2009), Bulong (2011), Shake, Rattle and Roll Fourteen: The Invasion (2012), and The Ghost Bride (2017).

The plot

Ang Mga Kaibigan ni Mama Susan is critically acclaimed Filipino novelist Bob Ong’s eighth novel and his first attempt in the horror/suspense genre. It was published in 2010.

The novel revolves around the story of Galo, a student in Manila who returns home to an island after learning about his grandmother’s illness.

However, he gets confronted by various disturbing events in the island that lead him into questioning his sanity.

Garcia will be portraying the role of Galo, while veteran actress Ferro will be playing the role of Mama Susan.

The film was originally intended as one of the official entries of the 2020 Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF). However, Regal Entertainment decided to pull it out of the competition.

In a TikTok video shared by Regal Entertainment, Garcia revealed the struggles that the crew encountered during the making of the film, which was shot in the middle of the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Sobrang hirap ng shoot namin dito, ang hirap ng location,” the actor said.

“That time naka-face shield pa kami, kailangan naming mag-mask, every five minutes we need to wash our hands. Medyo mabusisi sya para sa taping na probinsya yung setup […] Sobrang hirap talaga pero worth it yung hirap namin,” he added.
