Awakening the third eye: How bad can it get?

by Izel Abanilla

Remember that woman standing by the balcony with her toes afloat from the ground? Or those strange footsteps you hear from the basement? How about that mysterious kid who follows you around?

Do these visions satisfy you or scare you?

It is not unusual to hear about people seeing strange stuff, hearing spooky noises, or feeling weird presences. If you keep having these unusual impressions, chances are you have an open or active third eye. The question is, do you want it?

This is what Karen Mendoza, a 27-year-old news reporter, has had to live with all her life. She requested for her real identity to be kept for safety in her work.

Since she was a kid, she has been seeing and feeling things that aren’t in the physical realm. As she grew older, she realized why she was so receptive to things that could not be explained. It’s because she has a gift – an active third eye.

“Bata pa lang ako, sanay na ako maka-witness ng kakaiba,” she told republicasia.

“Kasi Mama ko, dinadayo dati sa bahay namin. May nagpapagamot, nagpapatawas. Pero never ko inisip na may gift din ako,” she said.

According to her, she usually receives vibrations mostly through “feels and dreams.” As for images, she sees them in the form of “shadows or silhouettes.”

“Pakiramdam lang talaga and malalaman ko kung saan siya nakapwesto,” she said.

She remembers one prominent instance years ago when the paranormal impressions she felt made physical manifestations. All of a sudden, she had scratches on her skin that came out of nowhere.

“Several years ago, naranasan ko may physical manifestations. As in kita ko nagkaroon ako kalmot sa legs unti-unti tapos unti-unti din nag-fade,” she told republicasia.

It was during this time that she was always sick and engrossed  in negativity. This is when she met a group of people with the same gift and interest who helped her understand and fully embrace her gift.

It’s not all the time however that her extra sensitivity served her spooky things. In fact, some of it served as a warning to her about an impending natural disaster or even an accident.

One time, the vision of Roxas Boulevard heavily flooding due to an incoming typhoon back in 2011 entered her mind’s eye. Three days after her dream, Typhoid Pedring struck the Philippines and the picture in her mind happened.

“Typhoon Pedring yan, 2011. 2-3 days bago tumama, napanaginipan ko yung flooding sa Roxas Boulevard, kasama yung paglubog ng Sofitel,” she said.

Another vision came to her in 2017 and this time, it literally saved her life.

“Mga 2017 yata… madaling araw na. Pauwi na ako. Sobrang antok and pagod na ako. Napapikit na ako behind the wheel. Tapos may sumigaw sa tenga ko ng pangalan ko. Pagdilat ko, nasa gitna ako ng 2 trucks sa Libis, inches away from the one to my right,” she shared.

But unlike those who want to have it closed because it already affects their day to day living, Mendoza prefers to keep hers open because she has managed to gain control of it.

“Parang mind over matter. If di ko masyado iniisip, walang manifestations. Unless overpowering yung “presence”, nararamdaman ko talaga,” she said.

“Sinasabihan ko lang na wag akong gambalain, ganun,” she finished.

Now everyone however can handle such impressions like Mendoza. Some in fact want to have it closed and have their life’s peace and normalcy back.

What is a third eye?

According to Peachie Dioquino-Valera, one of the founders and council members of LightSeers, a group of paranormal investigators, the third eye, also known as the ajna, means one is able to see through the invisible realm or dimension through the mind’s eye.

Basically, a third eye is one of the forms of the “sixth sense” or a power of perception in addition to the commonly accepted five senses.

Contrary to popular belief, the third eye’s capabilities are so vast it can actually help dramatically improve lives only if people knew how to use it properly..

Furthermore, when a person is attuned to his intuition, he becomes receptive to impressions that can manifest in the form of images, signs, insights and dreams among others. In turn, individuals who are “open” likewise get to be more receptive to things “paranormal” or that which cannot be explained by science.

Valera went on to discuss that there are actually various presentations of this sixth sense. Called clair senses, these are types of psychic abilities that correspond with the five senses of seeing, hearing, feeling, smelling and tasting.

To recognize each person’s style of sensing, Valero discussed each one.

  1. Clairvoyance or clear seeing

Basically, if one is gifted with seeing visions, he is considered a clairvoyant. This is the capability of the mind’s eye to see images, reflections, and impressions of the past, present, and future.

  1. Clairaudience

This is defined as hearing sounds or voices in your mind’s eye that may not exactly exist in the physical world. This is because, on rare occasions, spirits or entities can create audible sounds that sensitive clairaudients can receive.

  1. Clairsentience

When a person is able to feel another person’s or spirit’s emotions, especially their pain and anger, he is considered clairsentient. These are people who usually have strong gut feelings about a particular person or place for practically no apparent reason.

  1. Clairalience

Clairalience, meanwhile, is the ability to smell odors, aromas, and scents that do not have a physical source. Usually, people who have this sensitivity smell the perfume or natural scent of a deceased relative. Ever encountered someone who says he smells flowers or anything related to the dead, even if the place is squeaky clean? That’s basically how it is.

  1. Clairgustance

People who have this sensitivity can actually taste something that’s not necessarily there. Normally, when a deceased loved one wants to communicate, it attempts to manifest through a particular food or beverage

  1. Claircognizance

Claircognizance is the ability to access knowledge about people or events that you would not normally have. There are instances where spirits impress “truths” on people out of nowhere. A prime example of this one would be a premonition or forewarning of something that is set to happen in the future.

Benefits of having a third eye

It may be hard to believe for some, but having an open or active third eye actually has more benefits than just seeing the unexplained.

  1. Enhanced intelligence

Valera highlighted that what people don’t know is that the third eye, once activated and harnessed to its full power, can enhance intuition, general intelligence, and mental intelligence. It can also enhance memory, imagination, focus, and understanding of the self. A gifted person could find himself solving math problems easily, becoming even more creative, making more beautiful songs, or simply having that quick mental process.

  1. Higher consciousness

Enhanced intuition also promotes greater self-awareness and a mastery of emotions. Also, it makes you sense what’s wrong with a person, a place, or a situation, especially in the most crucial moments.

  1. It makes you more empathetic and compassionate

When a person is attuned to the emotions of himself and others, he feels for them way better and becomes more empathetic and compassionate.

How much worse can it get?

  1. Entities can actually manifest in your vision, causing you to panic.

Valera said that there are cases when spirits get attracted to extra sensitive people so much that they just suddenly appear in front, at the back, or on the periphery that it causes panic in the person. Apart from the eyes, all the rest of the senses could also have increased sensitivity, making a person hear, feel, smell, or taste entities that can be disturbing.

This is why a sixth sense can actually cause harm to those with mental conditions because the impressions they get can lead to a breakdown or, worse, an attack.

  1. Difficulty separating reality from imagination

With the deluge of inexplicable impressions once becoming open, the human mind tends to be aware of all planes of reality, which can impair one’s focus and understanding of the current reality and lead to the inability to feel grounded and present.

  1. Bizarre dreams and nightmares

Along with receiving through the five senses, visions and impressions can also manifest through bizarre dreams, often nightmares for a sensitive person. This is why enhanced intuition could cause sleep difficulties for a person who has it, which could later affect his health and daily business.

It can be turned ON and OFF

Contrary to the general belief that impressions received by the third eye can’t be controlled, Valero said this can actually be minimized by shifting your focus and doing rituals and meditations that can lower the sensitivity.

“I would not say turning on and off, but [comparing to] volume, it’s lower, she said.

Within their group, they call this practice grounding, where specific mind exercises are done to partially seal the entity’s doorway to a person.

“I can put myself in a way na I would not see it visually, or pwede ‘pag marami ako nararamdaman, I ground myself. So we do that through meditation and visualization,” she said.

“You can minimize it, not totally off. Even if I say I am grounded myself, I could still say I am sensitive lalo na sa pakiramdam and pangrinig for me,” she added.

Valero said even a person like her who has been harnessing the power of the third eye for years still wants a time off or a break from supernatural impressions because it can be bothersome. At some point, whether you enjoy having it or not, you will still want a bit of space for yourself, she said.

“Pag lagi ka na lang open parang lutang for me ‘yung feeling and it’s distracting kasi kunwari gusto mong maligo pero may naririnig ka o may nakikita ka, the usual entities in your house, it can be unnerving,” she said.
