by Bryan Gadingan

THE Gilas Pilipinas 3×3 U23 team maintained its unblemished record at the 19th Asian Games in Hangzhou, China.

The collegiate squad progressed to 3-0 in Pool A with a win over Hong Kong, 21-15, on Wednesday, September 27, at the Deqing Geographic Information Park Basketball Court.

The two teams were tied 4-4 early on. Gilas then went on a 6-1 run fueled by John Rey Pasaol and Bryan Sajonia’s respective 2 points to take a comfortable 10-5 lead.

Pasaol put in the final touches with a free throw.

The Philippine team was led in scoring by Pasaol and Bismarck Lina. Pasaol, the brother of former 3×3 star Alvin, and Lina had 7 points each.

Sajonia had a 3-point and 7-rebound performance, while Justine Sanchez chipped in four points.

Gilas Pilipinas 3×3 is just one victory away from sweeping the group stage and advancing to the quarterfinals.

The Philippines defeated Jordan in their debut game and took down Chinese Taipei in the next match.

The Gilas 3×3 team is currently on a break before they face Mongolia on Friday, September 29.

Currently, Team Philippines is ranked 23rd in the medal standings. The Philippines now has 6 medals: 5 bronze and 1 silver. Arnel Mandal, a member of the wushu squad, won the first silver medal.

Team Philippines hopes to add more medals in order to improve their ranking.
