ADAMSON University has launched its own investigation into the death of one of its students, who went missing after reportedly attending fraternity rites.
The university confirmed the death of one of its students, who was last seen on February 18.
“It is with great sorrow that we confirm the untimely passing of one of our students last February 18, 2023 after the report of his disappearance. We are one with his family and friends in grieving this unexpected and unfortunate loss,” the university wrote in a statement posted on its social media pages.
Adamson said it is cooperating with authorities to get to the bottom of the incident.
“The University has conducted its own investigation and has cooperated with the authorities on the matter,” it said. “Rest assured, we will not allow anything to come amiss.”
It also called on members of the community to refrain from sharing unverified information about the incident.
Missing since Feb 18
On Wednesday, the university publication called for help from the public for information about John Matthew Salilig, who has been missing since Saturday, February 18.
Salilig was a 24-year-old chemical engineering student who was last seen at the Jac Liner Bus Terminal at Buendia, Manila.
He was found buried in a vacant lot near Barangay Malagasang in Imus, Cavite on Tuesday, February 28, after one of the suspects pointed to the location of his remains.
According to the initial probe conducted by the Biñan police, Salilig was said to have attended the initiation rites of Tau Gamma Phi (Triskilion) fraternity in Laguna on the day of his disappearance.
While the authorities have yet to confirm the victim’s cause of death, fraternity violence is one of the angles being considered in the investigation.

“Ang mensahe lang po doon sa taga-Adamson, mga authorities doon, at mga officers, sana this will come to an end, itong klaseng gawain ng mga ganitong mga fraternities like the Tau Gamma, and hopefully matulungan nila kami because yung anak namin [is] the victim, kami ang biktima dito,” said Joeffrey Salilig, the victim’s father.
Adamson calls on students to be careful
Meanwhile, Adamson University called on its students “to be mindful and vigilant of their activities whether inside or outside the campus.”
It said they should not hesitate to contact the Office for Campus Security and Safety when they feel unsafe and uncertain. The Office for Student Affairs is also open to them.
“Adamson University has always been a familiar space for all of its students, teachers, personnel, alumni, friends, and visitors. This is your safe place along San Marcelino. We will ensure that it remains that way,” it said.
