Vice Ganda to headline new film ‘And the Breadwinner is…’

by Joanna Deala

PREPARE your stomach to get hurt from laughing as “Unkabogable” superstar Vice Ganda is set to return to the big screen this year.

The comedian confirmed this in an episode of the noontime variety show “It’s Showtime” and revealed the title of the movie: “And The Breadwinner Is…” The forthcoming big screen project will be helmed by award-winning filmmaker Jun Robles Lana, under Star Cinema and The IdeaFirst Company.

“Magkakaroon ako ng pelikula na kasama si direk Jun Luna. Ididirek ako ni Jun Lana at sila ang magsusulat ng pelikula ko, napakasuwerte ko. Kaya madlang people, this is it–new movie alert. Your mother will be mothering again sa mga sinehan. Magbabalik-pelikula po tayo para magbigay ng unkabogability sa buong society,” Vice Ganda announced.

For Vice Ganda, his new movie is one of the highlights of his acting career. He expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to collaborate with Lana, whom the comedian praised for his filmmaking skill.

“Ang gaganda ng mga ginagawa niyang pelikula. Kung hindi man lahat, halos lahat. Ako, lahat ng napanuod kong pelikula mo ang ganda,” he told the director.

“And The Breadwinner Is…” will be Vice Ganda and Lana’s first team-up in a movie, as well as Star Cinema and The IdeaFirst Company.

According to Lana, the forthcoming film is personal to him and Vice Ganda, and will resonate with many viewers.

“Lahat nang inaasahan niyo sa isang pelikula ni Vice, yung saya, yung riot na comedy, hindi lang namin basta ibibigay kung hindi hihigitan pa namin,” the filmmaker said.

Vice Ganda also revealed that one of his “It’s Showtime” co-hosts, Jhong Hilario, will be joining him in his new big-screen project. Hilario, on the other hand, expressed his excitement for the movie.

The premiere date is yet to be announced, but the comedian said it will be shown in theaters this year.

“And The Breadwinner Is…” will be Vice Ganda’s first movie in two years, following “Partners in Crime” with actress and content creator Ivana Alawi. This was one of the official entries in the 2022 Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF).

Vice Ganda’s MMFF history

Vice Ganda has been a consistent contender in the annual film festival since “Sisterakas” in 2012, helmed by the late Wenn V. Deramas and produced by Star Cinema and Viva Films.

This was followed by another Deramas film, “Girl, Boy, Bakla, Tomboy” in 2013, where the comedian starred alongside “Diamond Star” Maricel Soriano.

“The Amazing Praybeyt Benjamin,” directed by Deramas, came next in 2014 as a sequel to Vice Ganda’s 2011 box-office hit “The Unkabogable Praybet Benjamin,” then “Beauty and the Bestie” in 2015, “Gandarrapiddo: The Revenger Squad” in 2017, “Fantastica” in 2018, and “The Mall, the Merrier!” in 2019.

Vice Ganda skipped the 49th edition of the MMFF last year, which featured 10 films for the first time. The previous MMFF editions only had eight official entries.

For this year, the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA), the film festival’s organizer, said that the 50th edition will have its usual eight entries, but MMDA acting chair Romando Artes brought up the possibility of expanding the lineup should there be a tough competition among the movies.
