FILIPINO viewers were sent abuzz after the release of Netflix Philippines’ first-ever Christmas station ID, where sneak peeks of new and forthcoming titles in the streaming platform were unveiled.
Among the new titles is Keys to the Heart, the Philippine remake of the 2018 South Korean film of the same name directed by Choi Sung Hyun and starring Lee Byung Hun, Yoon Yuh Jung, and Park Jeong Min.
The audiences’ excitement has drummed up after Netflix Philippines released the trailer of the heartwarming dramedy.
“Jab, jab, straight… to my heart,” the streaming platform said on X.
Keys to the Heart centers on the “dysfunctional” reunion of an estranged family consisting of a washed-up boxer, his long-lost mother, and his autistic but musically gifted young brother.
Zanjoe Marudo will play the role of the boxer named Joma, while Elijah Canlas will give life to his brother named Jayjay. Their mother, portrayed by Dolly De Leon, will try to re-establish the bonds between herself and the two estranged brothers.
In the one minute and 31 second trailer, Joma is seen applying to become a sparring partner but fails to secure the job after getting knocked out easily during his trial.
“Alam mo, tapos ka na, Joma. Maghanap ka na ng ibang matutuluyan mo,” a man tells him, leading him to hand out flyers on the street.
Another man can be heard asking Joma about his mother, to which he replies, “Wala akong nanay.”
The next scene shows the washed-up boxer crossing paths with his mom on the street and meeting his brother who turns out to be a genius pianist.
“Uy, kahit ganon ‘yon ha, pinapakinggan lang niya ang isang kanta nang isang beses, kaya niyang patugtugin nang plakadong-plakado,” a woman can be heard saying in the trailer.
Joma then tries to help Jayjay enter a contest and teaches him the basic skills of boxing.
The cast of the forthcoming film also includes Tirso Cruz III, Carlo Tarobal, Katya Santos, Althea Pinzon, Lao Rodriguez, Mark Striegl, Bart Guingona, and Miss Universe Philippines 2023 Michelle Dee.
Directed by Kerwin Go, Keys to the Heart will be available on October 4.
Marudo previously shared on Instagram several behind-the-scenes photos from the filming of Keys to the Heart.
Some snaps showed him sitting at the corner of a boxing ring, him and Canlas holding picture frames bearing photos of their characters in the film, and a family portrait where the three lead actors can be seen wearing birthday hats.
“KEYS TO THE HEART. Coming soon on [Netflix],” he wrote in the caption, along with emojis of a key, a red heart, a boxing glove, and a piano.
The film is Marudo’s next project after the success of revenge drama television series Dirty Linen.
Canlas, meanwhile, also shared the trailer on his Instagram account and said that the film was “made with a lot of empathy and heart.”
