Women are indeed winning this Women’s Month!
Another female artist has been recognized for their outstanding talents and their contribution to the thriving Filipino music industry: P-pop girl group BINI, also known as the “nation’s girl group.”
On Wednesday, Billboard Philippines announced that BINI will be honored as its Women in Music Rising Stars, recognizing how the girl group smoothly won the hearts of listeners through their catchy and relatable discography. BINI is the first-ever recipient of the prestigious award, which will be given on March 22.
Billboard Philippines acknowledged the group’s first two albums “Born To Win” and “Feel Good” in 2021 and 2022, respectively, that helped BINI make noise in the local music scene. It also noted how the girl group gained immense popularity with its trending song “Pantropiko,” “Karera,” and the newly released “Salamin, Salamin.”
These three tracks are part of BINI’s debut extended play (EP) “Talaarawan,” which it dropped on March 8, coinciding the celebration of the International Women’s Day.
BINI—composed of Jhoanna, Aiah, Colet, Gwen, Maloi, Mikha, Stacey and Sheena—is known to be an advocate for women’s empowerment.
In a previous interview with republicasia, BINI’s main rapper Aiah shared that International Women’s Day was the “perfect” date for the release of their diary-inspired EP as they aimed to celebrate and give recognition to all the women who worked hard for “Talaarawan.” The girl group would also like to make their fans, particularly young female BLOOMs, to realize their “value and worth” through the EP, according to its leader Jhoanna.
“Seeing how far the impact of their music has gone, has inspired the group to remain committed to authenticity, resisting industry standards to carve out their own identity, rather than conforming to traditional idol standards,” a Billboard Philippines article read.
BINI was grateful for the recognition given to them by Billboard Philippines.
“It’s truly a privilege to receive this recognition and to represent the power of women in the industry,” BINI said in a post on X (formerly Twitter).
The group continued, “This only fuels us to strive harder, break more barriers, and inspire generations to come!”
Filipino BLOOMs couldn’t be prouder of their idols and said that they deserved such an award.
Their award came after Popstar Royalty Sarah Geronimo received the Global Force Award at the 2024 Billboard Women in Music Award in California last week. She’s also the first-ever Filipina artist to receive the recognition.
BINI’s song “Pantropiko,” which gives the feeling of falling in love in summer, has been invading netizens’ social media feeds, as many people are joining the “Pantropiko” dance challenge.
In January, the song—which was initially released in November 2023 before it was included in the “Talaarawan” EP—entered the Viral chart of digital music service Spotify Philippines, peaking in the Top 30.
The catchy and feel-good song even made international artists, such as K-pop idols, grooved to its choreography. Among them are Irene of girl group Red Velvet, Ryujin of girl group ITZY, and recently, Jay of boy group ENHYPEN.
As of writing, “Pantropiko” now has more than eight million streams on Spotify.
