EXPLAINER: What’s next for Amores?

He can’t play for the remainder of the season.

The embattled John Amores of Jose Rizal University (JRU)  Heavy Bombers will no longer play for the remainder of the Season 98 seniors basketball tournament, meaning he’s also banned from attending team practices held by the university. But Amores could still play in the league if he can present a “reasonable cause” to the National Collegiate Athletics Association (NCAA) management.

All because in last Tuesday’s match, he lost his cool  while his team JRU Heavy Bombers  was fighting it out  with  De La Salle College of St. Benilde Blazers and punched four other players of CSB Blazers.

The game came to a halt.

The NCAA has ordered an “indefinite suspension’” of Amores a day after the brawl – a decision that the JRU administration later seconded.

According to the NCAA decision, violence has “no place” in the athletics league.

The JRU management issued a statement and apologized for what happened; however, they added that the university will conduct a separate internal probe different from “any decision that the NCAA Management Committee may have.”

But what’s next after his indefinite suspension?

In a television interview, Fr. Victor Calvo, O.P., the NCAA Management Committee (ManCom) representative of Colegio de San Juan de Letran, clarified that although the term used for the Amores case was ‘suspension,’ the process to be reinstated remains the same with banning.

However, Calvo said the indefinite suspension is a way of giving the player a “small opening” to consider the due process that the NCAA would conduct to his case.

Recommendations

Of the four-point recommendations, aside from being banned from playing in the league raised by former Philippine Basketball League (PBL) commissioner and veteran sports analyst Chino Trinidad, he also suggested that Amores should be automatically expelled from the JRU basketball team and as well from the school’s system.

However, according to Trinidad, the JRU system should utilize its facilities to guide Amores to recovery, as the latter needs to undergo rigorous anger management counseling for him to recover.

“Merong pinagdadaanan yung bata. Itong item na ito, ang pinaka-importante is the mental wellbeing of not just athletes but as Filipinos, he said.

The sports analyst also advised Amores to temporarily refrain from using social media as he may face massive online friction.

“Alis na muna siya sa social media kasi grabe ang aabutin na backclash ni John dito sa labanan na ito. Hindi magiging healthy for him mentally kung ano pa ‘yung makikita niya,” Trinidad said.

Amores of the Heavy Bombers charged past the CSB bench and punched Mark Sango, Jimboy Pasturan, and Taine Davis of the Blazers. What specifically caused Amores to lose his temper during the heat is unknown. The player apologized online for his action during the game but deleted the status post afterward.

The NCAA decided CSB Blazers as the game-winner with a final score of 71-51.

Some 11 players of JRU Heavy Bombers and three from the side of CSB players have been suspended by the NCAA, according to Calvo.

For now,  poor Amores will have to stay on the bench, keep his cool and  comfort his bruised ego.
