“Yolanda” fast facts 

Today marked the ninth anniversary of Typhoon Yolanda, the worst typhoon to hit the Philippines. 

This is according to the records of the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) based on the 720 tropical cyclones that entered the country from 1970 to 2013.

Here’s what happened on November 8, 2013 based on the final report of the NDRRMC:

  • Yolanda made six landfalls. First was over Guiuan, Eastern Samar in the early morning (4:40 AM). Second landfall was in Tolosa, Leyte, then crossed Northern Leyte for two hours and made the third landfall (9:40 AM) in Daanbantayan, northern tip of Cebu Province. It made the 4th landfall in Bantayan Island in the late morning (10:40 AM), fifth landfall was in Concepcion (12:00 NN), sixth landfall was in Busuanga, Northen Palawan in the evening (8:00 PM). It exited the Philippine Area of Responsibility in the afternoon of November 9,2013.
  • At least 6,300 were killed. Most deaths were due to drowning and trauma.
  • 28,688 were injured and 1,062 are missing.
  • Affected 3,424,593 families from 44 provinces, 591 municipalities, 57 cities in nine Regions (IV-A, IV-B, V, VI, VII, VIII, X, XI and CARAGA).
  • Damaged houses were tallied at 1,140,332.
  • The estimated damage to properties stood at P93 billion.
  • The infrastructure sector suffered damage to transport that include national and provincial/local roads and bridges, seaports, airports, flood control as well as utilities like water supply systems, power supply, drainage system and telecommunications.
  • School buildings, health facilities, government buildings and agricultural and irrigation facilities also incurred considerable damage and losses.
