LAST Monday, an LPG tank inside a laundry shop in Manila exploded, injuring at least 20 persons including students of De La Salle University Taft.
The shop owner said LPG tanks are used for the dryer. On that day, two tanks were delivered.
It was discovered later, however, that one was connected while the gas hose of the second tank was dangling and that this may have caused the leak.
While the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) has yet to release its final report on the real cause of explosion, the agency shared some safety tips on the proper use and care for LPG tanks.
Fast fact: LPG tanks only explode if exposed to extreme heat, just like what probably happened at the laundry shop.
LPG gas is odorless and colorless. But ethyl mercaptan, an odorant, is added to the gas.
When there is a gas leak, this will generate the smell similar to rotten eggs. Once this odor is detected, look for the source of the leak.
2. Place LPG tanks in a well-ventilated area.
LPG tank leak can be tested for leaks by wiping soapy water all over the gas hose. Check for the presence of bubbles along the hose. If bubbles are seen, replace the gas hose immediately.
Do not try to repair the gas hose by using scotch tape or any kind of tape.
Make it a habit to check the LPG tank before and after use.
It is better to close the regulator on the LPG than the switch on the stove.
Turning off the regulator makes sure that gas is no longer flowing from the tank into the hose.
Also, buy cylinders with proper markings, e.g., brand name, tare weight.
Double check the security seal. It has to be intact and firmly affixed to the valve.
Scam alert: The brand name/logo in the cylinder and the seal must be the same.
Do not invert the LPG cylinder or let it lie horizontally on the floor.
Keep LPG cylinders away from electrical points and other sources of fire/ ignition.
Make sure to keep the gas hose safe from damage.
Sometimes the hose can be damaged when hot cooking oil is splashed on it or when eaten through by rats.
Use only LPG resistant rubber hoses with clamps.
Check the age of the gas stove. Single gas stoves can be used for cooking for one year while industrial stoves used in eateries or restaurants are good for three years.
