State weather agency Pagasa is monitoring a low pressure area that’s partly causing rains in Mindanao, Palawan, Bicol region, and some parts in the Visayas.

Daniel James Villamil, weather forecaster, said the low pressure area was located outside the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR), around 200 kilometers south, south-east of General Santos City. It merged into the Inter-Tropical Convergence Zone.

“Maliit ang tsansa na maging bagyo ang low pressure area sa loob ng 24 oras,” Villamil said.

Another weather system, shear line, is causing isolated rains and thunderstorms in Cagayan, Isabela, Aurora and Quezon.

Bicol region and eastern Visayas will experience cloudy to cloudy skies, with chances of rains, around midday until evening.

Metro Manila and the rest of the country will experience generally fair weather conditions, hot and humid weather, but may still have isolated rain showers and localized thunderstorms. 

What is LPA trough, ITCZ and shear line?

ITCZ or the inter-tropical convergence zone is the band of clouds consisting of showers, with occasional thunderstorms, that encircles the globe near the equator. The seasonal shifts in the location of the ITCZ affects rainfall in many countries near the equator including the Philippines.

The shear line or the Tail-end of a Frontal System is a a a narrow corridor where there is an abrupt change in the horizontal component of the wind. The convergence of the wind causes rains and thunderstorms.

A trough is found near low pressure area.

What’s the impact of LPA trough, ITCZ and shear line?

Pagasa warned residents in areas affected by thunderstorms to take “precautionary measures” against impacts such as flash floods and landslides.

Residents along mountain slope are also advised for possible mudslides and rockslides.

Pagasa issued a series of heavy rainfall warning and thunderstorm advisories in the following areas today:

6am. Tawi-Tawi. Yellow warning level (37,500-75,000 drums/square kilometer). 

6am. Light to moderate with occasional heavy rains  (2.5-7.5 with occasionally 7.5-15 liters/meter² per hour)  in the following Mindanao areas:

• Zamboanga City
• Basilan: Isabela, Lantawan, Maluso, Sumisip, Al-Barka
• Sulu: Indanan, Parang, Jolo, Banguingui
• Bukidnon: Manolo Fortich, Malitbog, Cabanglasan
• Davao City
• Davao del Sur
• Davao Occidental
• Davao Oriental: Mati, Governor Generoso,  
• Agusan del Norte: Cabadbaran, Tubay, Santiago
