Tsunami Awareness Highlights Earthquake Drill Held Today

THE National Disaster Risk Reduction Management Council (NDRRMC), led the fourth quarter National Simultaneous Earthquake Drill (NSED), with the main ceremony held at the Bulungan Seafood Market in Parañaque City on Thursday.

Various private and public offices, including schools and communities from different parts of the country, participated in the event to continuously raise awareness about what to do during a temblor.

“Ang NSED ay isa lmang sa napakarami nating mga gawain upang mas mapagtibay ang kahandaan ng sambayanan,” said Office of the Civil Defense Undersecretary Raymundo Ferrer.

The simulation exercise also highlighted the call for tsunami awareness and preparedness as part of the observance of the World Tsunami Awareness today.

Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology Deputy Director Teresito Baculcol also attended the event.

He emphasized the importance of developing a culture of awareness among the communities, considering that “66 out of 81 provinces in the country are exposed to tsunami hazards.”

Local government units across the country participated in the drill.

It comes a few weeks after a 6.4 magnitude earthquake struck Abra on October 26.

Abra also participated in today’s drill.

The Philippine is among the countries that are included in the Pacific Ring of Fire, making it vulnerable to natural calamities such as earthquakes and tsunamis.
