Signals lifted as Betty weakens into severe tropical storm

The weather bureau PAGASA lifted all storm warnings on Thursday as Betty weakened into a severe tropical storm.

As of 10 a.m., Betty was located 570 kilometers northeast of Itbayat, Batanes, carrying maximum sustained winds of 100 kilometers per hour near the center and gustiness of up to 125 km/h, PAGASA said in its 11 a.m. bulletin.

It was moving north northeastward at 10 km/h.

PAGASA said Betty was due to leave the Philippine Area of Responsibility on Thursday afternoon.

“As Betty continues to move away from the country, the Southwest Monsoon will become the dominant rain-causing system in the country within the day,” PAGASA said.

“Under these conditions, flooding and rain-induced landslides are possible, especially in areas that are highly or very highly susceptible to these hazards as identified in hazard maps and in localities that [have] experienced considerable amounts of rainfall for the past several days,” it added.

Betty has affected thousands of people in Cagayan Valley, Central Luzon, Western Visayas, and the Cordillera Administrative Region, according to the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council.

There were no reports of casualties.
