Public elementary and secondary schools will begin holding classes for the School Year 2023-2024 on August 29, the Department of Education (DepEd) said Thursday.
Private institutions may choose to open classes on any date starting the first Monday of June but not later than the last day of August, as provided under Republic Act 11480, the department said in an advisory.
In preparation for the upcoming school year, the DepEd conducted early registration of incoming Kindergarten, Grades 1, 7, and 11 learners in public schools from May 10 to June 9.
The DepEd has yet to release the school calendar for the next academic year.
Last month, Senator Sherwin Gatchalian released a Pulse Asia survey conducted in June that found that 80 percent, or eight out of ten Filipinos, agreed with bringing back students’ April and May summer breaks, which fall during the country’s dry season.
At present, the school break is from July to August, which coincides with the wet season in the country.
