A total of five individuals have died as Typhoon Egay, internationally known as Doksuri, wreaked havoc in Luzon, according to the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council.
The NDRRMC said in its Thursday morning bulletin that one fatality was recorded in the Calabarzon region, while four were reported in the Cordillera Administrative Region.
The Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office in the Mountain Province confirmed the death of a 38-year-old male whose body was retrieved from the mud after a massive landslide occurred at Sitio Pakkil, Caluttit, Bontoc.
“The eroded soil, along with bamboo trees, plummeted down the road and into the rice fields below where it hit a shanty with two individuals taking shelter,” it said on Facebook.
The victim, identified as Mangintee Paras-e Sagandoy, was brought to the Bontoc General Hospital but was declared dead at about 5:45 p.m. on Wednesday.
Meanwhile, a 16-year-old boy was killed due to a landslide in Bakakeng Central, Baguio City, according to the Baguio City Public Information Office.
In its Facebook post, the local government said a Wednesday morning landslide trapped the teenager and his parents inside their home. His parents survived and were brought to the hospital for treatment.
The state disaster agency said it is verifying the reported deaths.
Floods in NCR
Heavy rains brought by Typhoon Egay also flooded several areas in Metro Manila on Thursday.
The Manila Public Information Office reported gutter deep flood along Taft Avenue at 7:30 a.m., but it subsided at 8:53 a.m.
Floods also affected several areas in Valenzuela City, including Dalandanan, Maysan, Arkong Bato, and Veinte Reales, as of Thursday morning.
Floods less than 10-inch deep were also reported in parts of Malabon City such as Panghulo, Gov. Pascual Avenue, F.Sevilla Boulevard, Rizal Avenue Extension, C.Arellano, M. Sioson Street in Dampalit, and Don Basilio Road.
The city government said that traffic conditions were normal.
Flooding was also experienced along Quirino Highway.
Affected families
A total of 102,241 Filipino families were affected by Typhoon Egay, based on the latest report of the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) on Wednesday.
As of 6 p.m., there were 5,790 families in evacuation centers, while 1,954 families were seeking temporary shelters with their relatives or friends.
A total of 21 houses were damaged, while 163 were partially damaged.
The total cost of humanitarian assistance provided by the DSWD, local government units and other agencies have reached P11-million.
