IT may be a bit chilly when you wake up today as the Northeast Monsoon, or locally called amihan, has become stronger.
Metro Manila registered its lowest temperature yet for the year at 22°C yesterday.
For the eastern corridor of Luzon, amihan will bring more rains, state weather bureau Pagasa said. Visayas and Mindanao will be cloudy with thunderstorms every now and then.
Cordillera Administrative Region, Cagayan Valley, Bicol Region, Aurora and Quezon will have cloudy skies with rains.
The rains may be moderate with at times heavy, so watch out for possible flash floods or landslides, Pagasa said.
Visayas and Mindanao will also have generally fair weather – partly cloudy to cloudy skies. But there will be rain showers and thunderstorms in pockets brought by localized thunderstorms.
Veronica Torres, Pagasa weather forecast specialist, said there is a high chance of thunderstorms in Mindanao in the afternoon.
Pagasa will issue thunderstorm advisories so continue to monitor for updates. A severe thunderstorm might trigger landslides.
As for Metro Manila and the rest of Luzon, the Northeast Monsoon will have no significant impact. There might still be rains, but only short-lived.
It was a bit warmer yesterday in the mountain cities of Baguio in Banguet and Malaybalay in Bukidnon, compared to the past few days. The lowest temperature recorded was 16.5°C in Baguio City at around 4:50 am. Malaybalay registered the second lowest in the country at 17°C.
Basco, Batanes was quite chilly at 19.8°C around 2 am yesterday. Tanay residents woke up to 20.4°C yesterday morning.
Metro Manila’s lowest temperature was recorded in Pagasa’s station in Science Garden in Quezon City. On February 4, Science Garden also recorded a low of 20.6°C.
A number of Mindanao areas also experienced cold mornings yesterday at 21°C – Butuan City, General Santos City, and Laguindingan in Misamis Oriental.
Dauis, Bohol also registered 22°C.
Pagasa expects that the polar winds brought by the Northeast Monsoon will further bring down the temperature in the coming days.
Here’s the temperature forecast for today in key cities:
Despite the renewed strength of the Northeast Monsoon winds, Pagasa did not issue any gale warnings throughout the archipelago today.
Fishermen who are using small vessels and travellers on board small boats will not be prevented by the Philippine Coast Guard from going out to open seas.
“Pero ingat pa rin sa mga papalaot dito sa may bandang north of Luzon hanggang sa silangang bahagi ng ating bansa dahil ang lagay ng ating karagatan dito ay katamtaman hanggang sa maalon,” Torres said.
