Marcos wages campaign against “fake news”

by RepublicAsia

With today’s generation glued to their cellphones, and social media fast becoming the source of news and information, the proliferation of “fake news” seemed to be as fast as the every swipe on Facebook, Instagram and Tiktok.

Craig David, 21, a student at the University of Santo Tomas, said that there are times that he has read many issues and stories in social media – from the entertaining to the borderline absurd.

“It’s something that you will have to ask yourself, or even you parents and teachers if such news is true,” he told republicasia.

Among those include the many deaths of certain personalities – dead now alive later, and then dead again and alive later.

The latest of which was Lil Tay, who claimed that her social media was hacked when it was declared that she was dead, only to surface a few hours later – very much alive.

This is but a small sample of what needs to be addressed in social media, and apparently the government had also taken notice.

On August 14, 2023, President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr., initiated the Media and Information Literacy (MIL) Campaign led by the Presidential Communications Office.

Media and information Literacy is a tool to make the netizens think critically when exposed to news online. It educates a person about the role of media, and how it connects to society.

When a citizen is asked about how they felt when they are fooled with disinformation online, they will answer the word ‘dismayed’. So maybe, this project will help all the generation learn how to use media, and think critically when information is shown to them.

As disinformation and misinformation rampant to this age, the Philippine government took an initiative to combat the fake news dissemination online with the help of other agencies, and social media companies.

The ceremonial signing was attended by DepEd, together with CHED, DSWD, and DILG.

PCO Secretary Cheloy Velicaria-Garafil said in her speech that this initiative is a unified effort of the current administration and the media industry, and it is for the betterment of the country.

“We are not witnesses of history, we are architects of change, ‘ Garafil stated.

President Bongbong Marcos wanted this project to focus on the youth as their generation is the most vulnerable to information online.
