Kai Sotto sees limited minutes in final NBA Summer League game

Filipino basketball player Kai Sotto saw limited minutes in his final NBA Summer League stint with the Orlando Magic, reportedly due to back pain.

Sotto was on the court for only eight minutes on Sunday (Philippine time), compared to 13 in the previous game, tallying two rebounds, one block, and one assist for the Magic, who fell to the Boston Celtics, 94-77.

The Magic ended their Summer League campaign at the Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas, Nevada, without a win in five games.

Sotto made his NBA Summer League debut on Friday when he churned out six points, four rebounds, three blocks, and one assist in the game against the Portland Trail Blazers.

After the game, the 7-foot-3 center said he relished the experience of competing with and against “pretty skilled” players.

“It’s a good first game, just to go out there and compete. It’s not good that we didn’t win, but we learned a lot from this game,” he said.

“Everybody’s pretty skilled. Everybody is hungry to show that they are worthy of a roster spot. It’s competitive.”

Sotto was benched in the Magic’s first three matches.

The 21-year-old also acknowledged the support of his countrymen in his bid to become the first Filipino homegrown player in the NBA, the world’s premier professional basketball league.
