Davao de Oro quake: 16 injured, 36 schools damaged

SIXTEEN people were injured while 36 school buildings were damaged by the Magnitude 6.0 earthquake that hit Compostela, Davao de Oro last February 1. 

In a report, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) said no one died from the strong quake. 

Ten of those injured were students who fainted in two schools in Davao City. Another six were hurt in Davao De Oro.

Three teachers were trapped inside Matagdungan Elementary School in Nabunturan.

Four students fainted at Monkayo College of Arts, Sciences and Technology in Davao De Oro. Another college student experienced a panic attack in Nabunturan.

Only two families were affected, all from Davao de Oro – one in Compostela and another in Marapat. 

There were only 97 people affected from three barangays in Davao De Oro. Among these affected residents, 89 are patients at Montevista District Hospital in Davao de Oro who were forced to be evacuated to safer grounds. 

Damaged schools and other infrastructures

Davao De Oro, Davao del Norte and Davao City will likely suffer from the long-term effects of the jolt damaged 52 infrastructures.

    • Montevista National High School in Montevista
    • Banlag Elementary School in Monkayo
    • MonCAST in Monkayo
    • Monkayo National High School in Monkayo
  • 20 schools in Davao del Norte
    • Toril Elementary School in Samal
    • San Jose Elementary School in Samal

Four houses were also damaged in the said quake which induced two landslides in the city.

Meanwhile, NDRRMC cited that there were no major interruptions or damages reported to them when it comes to the status of lifelines in the affected area. This includes the status of their communication, power, water, roads, and bridges.

The 6.0 magnitude quake in Davao de Oro

Davaoeños were startled by a 6.0 magnitude earthquake on February 1, 2023 around 6:44 pm.

An Intensity V shake was felt in the grounds of Compostela, Davao de Oro, along with Laak, Mabini, Maco, Mawab, Monkayo, Montevista, Nabunturan, Pantukan, Maragusan, and New Bataan. The epicenter of the earthquake was recorded at the town of Compostela, Davao de Oro. 

Following the major earthquake, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) recorded a total of 745 aftershocks in the area as of February 3 at 8 am.
