BREAKING: Magnitude 6.1 quake jolts Davao de Oro; 10 studes fainted in Davao City

A strong magnitude 6.1 quake struck New Bataan in Davao De Oro around 6:46 pm Wednesday, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) reported.

Students fainted

At least 10 students reportedly fainted in Davao City at the height of commotion. Seven were from Daniel R. Aguinaldo National High School and three were from three were from Holy Cross of Calinan.

Phivolcs said Davao City experienced Intensity 4.

Epicenter: Work, class suspended

Intensity 5 was felt in Nabunturan, Davao de Oro. Regional disaster officials said there were houses which collapsed or damaged, while cracks were found in school establishments during initial inspection.

Davao de Oro Governor Dorothy “Dotdot” M. Gonzaga suspended work in government offices and clases tomorrow.

Tsunami scare in Mabini, Davao De Oro

Phivolcs said there is no tsunami alert because the epicenter was inland. The quake was tectonic in origin.

But still there was a tsunami scare in Mabini, Davao De Oro following reports of receding water levels along the coastline.

Davao del Norte

Davao Del Norte also reported cracks in a number of establishments.

Intensity 4 was felt in Davao City and Bislig, Surigao del Sur. Instruments also registered Intensity 4 level in Kidapawan, Alabel, Saranggani, Tupi in South Cotabato and Bislig City in Surigao del Sur.

Aftershocks with magnitude 3.6 were felt less at 7:07pm also in New Bataan. Then around 8:57 pm, residents felt another aftershock at magnitude 3.3.
