Audience happy to be back for cheerdance competition

IT was a successful comeback for the University Athletic Association of the Philippines Cheerdance Competition after pandemic restrictions were relaxed.

Over 18,000 students, alumni and even people from non UAAP schools were excited to support their favorite troupes.

Many brought balloons, banners and other props to cheer for their favorite schools.

John Paulo Gico, an Adamson University alumnus, said he felt the joy in watching the show live again, after years of seeing it only on screen.

“Sobrang saya dahil sobrang tagal bago ako makapanuod ulit ng [live] UAAP Cheerdance, parang bumabalik ‘yung mga memories before,” Gico said.

He said he saw the improvement in Adamson University’s cheerdancers.

“Pero I think may mas maibibigay pa sila or may maibubuga pa sila. I think next time makakabawi sila,” he added.

Rainier Mendoza, a La Sallian, said he is proud of the progress that his school has made.

“Although we know naman na La Salle isn’t always outstanding in cheerdance, I’m really proud of it because I can see progress with their performance and I’m looking forward to their future performances,” Mendoza said.

“I can feel the passion of our student athletes and it really amazes me,” he added.

There was also a scenario that seemed straight out of Kathniel’s “She’s Dating The Gangster” movie, as a group of men were cheering for their girlfriends with banners that read, “Go Mahal! Salyeeer Eyy!,”  “Go Sexy Love!” and “Basta UE masarap yan!”

The UAAP Cheerdance Competition returned last May after it was halted by the pandemic, but the performances were then subject to restrictions, such as a shorter performance time, a smaller group of performances, and no drummers. 

But the restrictions were lifted for the Season 85 competition on Saturday,

The arena was allowed to operate at full capacity, and the number of performers was back to a maximum of 25 and their routines back to six minutes from three minutes. The pep squad drummers were also allowed to return.
