MANILA, Philippines – Embattled Jose Rizal University’s forward John Amores was removed from the JRU basketball system effective immediately and was ordered to do community service as part of the university-imposed sanctions.
In a statement on Wednesday, the JRU said all privileges extended to Amores as a student-athlete have been canceled. He was also suspended from his classes but the statement said nothing about the duration of the suspension.
However, the school system will be providing psychological guidance to its athletes, including Amores.
“Mr. Amores will also be provided counseling and help to cope with the strain of what has taken place in his young life,” the statement said.
“Consistent with the mission and goals of the University and the NCAA, we reiterate our commitment that we will do everything to mold our student-athletes to be responsible citizens and better individuals, in and out of the sporting arena,” it added.
On November 9, the NCAA and JRU announced the indefinite suspension of Amores after the latter’s brawl with the four other De La Salle-College of St. Benilde players, saying “violence has no place in the NCAA.”
