FOR many years, motels in the Philippines were the go-to affordable accommodations for couples in their secret sex trysts and their ultimate destination on Valentine’s Day.
More often, if you talk about sex, let alone openly share having been to a motel, the conversation will rouse awkward reactions.
That’s why codes were invented, such as “short time,” “biglang liko,” or “motmot.” There was also a running joke that earthquakes are felt in Pasig, Pasay, Manila and Caloocan on Valentine’s night.
But with the advent of technology, amidst more openness and confidence of people about their sexuality, motels found a competition after the pandemic — Airbnb.
Airbnb
Airbnb is the app-based listing for short-term homestays or experience. It is so popular around the world that it has become a game-changer in tourism and hotel accommodations.
During the pandemic, the income of hotels and other accommodations, including Airbnb, went down. Many hotels and motels also closed due to losing business ventures.
This opened up an opportunity for Airbnb hosts in the Philippines. Some offered their condo units or houses to clients demanding a more affordable “short time.”
After the pandemic lockdowns were lifted, couples who were able to stay in Airbnb accommodations during their “sexcapades” became regulars of these places.
More and more couples are open to planning together their sexcapades and consensually agree where to do the deed. So they hop onto Airbnb and book a house or a room.
Patrons’ choice
However, many are still used to patronizing motels because these are more accessible and cheaper.
Dave, 32, prefers to bring his girlfriend to motels simply because, “di ko siya sine-search.”
Just like Dave, 36-year-old Cherk sees motels as a hassle-free kinky time go-to because of the accessibility of its locations and its tried and tested features.
“Eh kasi madali lang puntahan, walang makakakita sa inyo lalo pag may kotse kayo,” he said.
Meanwhile, there are those who see Airbnb as a safer, more exclusive sexy time hangout compared to motels.
Erika, 23, said: “Sa Airbnb kasi mas secluded yung place compared sa motel na stigmatized na by many. That’s why I prefer Airbnb, para less judgment and of course privacy pa rin.”
