WATCH: Roselle Nava’s son earns spot in The Voice Kids with ‘Bakit Nga Ba Mahal Kita’ rendition

by Izel Abanilla

It indeed runs in the blood.

The son of ‘90s diva Roselle Nava has proven he had his mother’s talent when he bagged in Martin Nieverra’s team in the fifth season of “The Voice Kids.”

What better song to sing than your own mother’s colossal hit “Bakit Nga Ba Mahal Kita.”

Even before finishing the song, 10-year-old Rafa Tan had Coach Nievera’s chair turn for him.

Judge KZ Tandingan asked the boy his name and who taught him how to sing. Rafa, answered his mom.

KZ called out for Rafa mom to come up and did not expect the next thing that happened.

Roselle, among the biggest divas of the ‘90s, stepped onto the stage and said hi to the stunned judges.

Both KZ and Martin walked up to Roselle and greeted her. Co-incidentally, Roselle’s appearance made the “Mahal Ko o Mahal Ako” hitmaker’s childhood dream come true as she was a big fan of the ‘90s singer.

“Na-meet ko na ‘yung tao sa notebook ko. Oh my gosh nasa notebook lang kita dati,” KZ said.

Martin asked, “Anak mo [pointing to Rafa]? No wonder you’re good.”

Martin took the opportunity to ask for a mother-and-son duet.

Rafa made an even better rendition of the song with his mom singing with him, while Roselle trended again on social media for her high-pitched voice.

Rafa missed out a line in his earlier performance that obviously affected his confidence but he was nonetheless comforted by Martin.

“Rafa, I think you’re a great singer, magaling ka mag-adjust, alam mo na may ginawa ka na hindi tama, you blamed no one else but yourself,” Nievera said.

Roselle was one of the most prominent OPM divas of the ‘90s. She popularized some sad songs that had become generational hits, such as “Bakit Nga Ba Mahal Kita,” “Dahil Mahal na Mahal Kita,” “Huwag Ka Nang Magbabalik” and many others.

She started her career as a member of the defunct ‘90s teen program “Ang TV” with batchmates Jolina Magdangal, Lindsay Custodio, Rica Peralejo, Claudine Barretto, Angelu de Leon, Gio Alvarez, Gila Alvarez, Victor Neri and a whole lot more.

Her songs became theme songs of top-grossing Star Cinema movies.

Today, she still actively sings and does occasional guestings.
